The N.C. Pork Council sponsored 70 high school and college interns at five N.C. pork companies through our Summer Internship
Program. These students came from across the state and the U.S. to gain hands on experience in many facets of the pork industry, from
the barns to the office. In late July, the NCPC hosted an Internship Roundup where the interns got together for dinner and discussion with
industry leaders. They also got a lesson in business dining etiquette, which was as tasty as it was educational!
"I'm grateful for my experience as a Social Forces
team member," Cureton said. "This experience gave
me the knowledge and advocacy skills to be listed as
a speaker for conferences and forums, creating events
to combine pork and art, and in less than a week,
going to another country to help rural farmers with
proper practices to provide their pigs a higher quality
of life that's based on biosecurity and husbandry." He
said his experience on the Student Social Forces gave
him a greater perspective on how alike modern and
traditional pig farmers are.
"Social media is ingrained in young people's lives,"
said Claire Masker, public relations director for the
Pork Checkoff. "It's easy for them to share their
thoughts about an industry that they are proud to
be a part of through the various social media channels available to them."
Consumers continue to have questions about how
pigs are raised, and no one knows the answers better
than pork producers.

PORK COOKERY SHOWS
OFF 4-H GRILLING SKILLS
Fifteen 4-Hers showed off their pork grilling skills
in the state Pork Cookery contest at N.C. State
University in July. Each of the students won their
local contest to qualify for the state competition.
Students showed off their creativity, as well as grilling abilities.
Tobey Lunceford of Richmond County took home
first place in the 9-11 years old age group with Ribs
with Cheerwine Barbecue Sauce. Waylon Lewis of
Edgecombe County and Morgan Hansen of Pender
County tied for first place in the 11-13 age group.
Lewis made an Aloha Eats recipe and Hansen made
Mediterranean Pork Burgers. The winning pork recipe
in the 14-18 age group was Vietnamese Grilled Pork by
15-year-old Erica Walker of Carteret County.
