NC Pork Report - Fall 2017 - 6

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Fall brings busy season for
members of the pork industry
and doing what we say we do make us

Mark Daughtry
2017 NCPC President

A

LOT OF THINGS ARE
happening this time of the
year and with everyone's
busy schedules it's hard
to stay abreast of all
that's going on in the pork industry. The
N.C. Pork Council has been a buzz lately
working hard to protect and promote
the pork industry. Change, innovation

the leaders in the industry. We want
to tell our story and we are passionate about feeding the world and protecting our environment and being a
good neighbor.
We Care principles are what we are.
Animal care is what we do and are good
at. Our employees and our families are
working every day, seven days a week,
to ensure safe food and a safe environment. I must commend the staff at the
Pork Council and the new CEO, Andy
Curliss, for the hard work they have
done. We are generating new content,
developing a new logo and even working on a virtual reality farm tour to
name a few new ideas we are bringing
to the industry.
Fall is a busy season: school, football,
barbecue and the State Fair are upon us.
A premiere event for us is the Whole
Hog Barbecue State Championship on
September 29-30 in Raleigh. This will
take place during the World of Bluegrass
music festival. If you haven't experienced either, make plans to come on
down and enjoy some delicious barbecue and some great music. October
brings the State Fair, and with it, the

pig shows and the Sale of Champions,
which will be held October 14 at 6 pm
in Graham Building. The Pork Council
is partnering with the N.C. Cattleman's
Association, N.C. Farm Bureau and
Feed the Dialogue to present a feature exhibit in the Graham Building.
We'll be reaching out for volunteers in
the coming weeks, so pay attention to
your email. (And if you aren't receiving
emails from the NCPC, please contact
the office to have your email added so
you can get the newsletter and other
event information.)
We have our young farmers and leaders of tomorrow coming too. The scholarship program has had to expand to
five because we have such good candidates. This is a first. I'd like to thank the
scholarship committee for stepping up
to provide three extra scholarships this
year. It goes to show that people in this
industry are always striving to encourage young people to excel in agriculture. The internship program has been
a great success that continues to grow.
The future will be in good hands.
Stay tuned for elections to the
board in December. Your votes are
your voice.
