The Call - Winter 2016 - 25

As performance metrics and data analytics become part of
daily life in 9‑1‑1 centers, many supervisors are left wondering
why managers and directors seem to always be asking for the
latest statistics. The program delivers a basic understanding of
why higher‑ups are interested in these metrics, and provides
supervisors with an understanding of how crunching the
numbers can be useful to improve your center's performance
and help call takers better do their jobs.
Recent research has confirmed what many have know
for years: Working in 9‑1‑1 takes a toll. As such, one of the
final topics discussed in the program is stress management.
Instructors describe the crucial role the supervisor plays in
understanding and assisting their coworkers in dealing with
the stresses inherent in the profession. It is critical for 9‑1‑1
professionals at every level to understand what they can do to
help their colleagues handle stress more effectively; because of
supervisors' close proximity to front‑line telecommunicators,
the need is even greater.
These are just a few of the seventeen sections in the
three‑day Center Supervisor Program. I am confident that this
course provides supervisors with the information they need to
lead a team into the future. I hope you agree! If you are interested
in learning more about the course, then check the NENA website
for more information and current classes in your area. And don't
hesitate to contact me at twooten@nena.org if you want to bring
the CSP to your agency, county, or chapter! ●

Current plans call for this notification procedure to be
developed into a formal NENA standard implemented by all
U.S. PSAPs by early 2018.
Like any good collaborative effort, we are identifying
additional ways that the 9‑1‑1 community and DOD can aid
each other in our incredibly important roles. From training
to technology, information to awareness, the success and
security of both of our families will be enhanced by our
increased level of communication and cooperation.
Rest assured, we will always maintain the separation
between civilian and military service and respect the
legal and political considerations involved in our efforts.
However, the lessons learned from Chattanooga and the 2010
shootings at Fort Hood demand that we include everyone
who can help us help our communities. Our duty as the
nation's 9‑1‑1 association also requires us to partner with
those who can benefit from our knowledge, experience, and
ability. Enabling cooperation, coordination, and a greater
understanding is a central goal of why NENA, and one we
take very seriously, especially in regard to helping protect our
military neighbors.
Please keep an eye on this space and the NENA website for
additional information on this critical effort. To those PSAPs
that have volunteered to help, thank you for being part of an
exciting effort to share information and save lives.  ●
