VISUALIZING SAFEST
PROCESSES
"BIM is a visual tool, and we can
show on a model where people can work
or not work," says Drew Robinson, vice
president of construction operations
at Rodgers. "It's an effective way to
communicate."
Rodgers used BIM on a project with a
significant amount of overhead work to
show the owners and security staff how
the company was going to build tunnels
to ensure safe access and egress to and
from the building. The construction team
was able to make adjustments to the
model to avoid blocking security cameras, before arriving at the project site.
"One of the benefits of the model is
we can run scenarios without spending money or putting people at risk,"
Robinson says.
On a project requiring a significant
amount of scaffolding on a building
with a complicated shape, Rodgers used
the model to figure out the best type
of scaffolding and where to put it to
reach all locations. When the mason
arrived, Rodgers had worked through
the model and identified ideal placement of the scaffolding, a vertical lift,
a trolley to lift stone to the appropriate
level, lay-down areas and how to load
materials onto it.
"We believe it allowed us to develop
a safer plan for that facility given the
size of the granite pieces we had to
put on the building," says Pat Rodgers,
president and CEO of Rodgers Builders.
When installing utilities, Rodgers
models the placement first. Other crews
know where the lines are, so as subsequent work takes place, the risk of
hitting a power line and electrocution
decreases.
On one project, Rodgers produced a
video of the model to explain traffic flow
and other aspects of the job.
"Those videos can be very powerful
for safety purposes," King says.

For instance, the company uses point
cloud data from drone flights overlaid
with multiple models to conduct virtual
safety walks on devices such as iPads,
laptops or virtual reality headsets.
"By flying the site with a drone, we
can see the surrounding conditions,
such as buildings, roadways and pedestrian routing, which can help us plan
the site safety logistics, laydown areas,
traffic routing, and drop-off locations
that make sense with the utilization
flow of the site," Hayter says. "We are

starting to utilize the overlay of point
cloud data to recognize overhead street
utilities, such as power lines, and seeing benefit in modeling other items, to
help with the safety and coordination
for underground systems."
If a site does not support drone flights,
Brasfield & Gorrie will laser scan it to
create point cloud data or use Google
Maps to develop a 3D-mesh representation of the site. Project teams can use the
site-specific models for safety training
and virtual jobsite utilization.

Reliable, flexible, and easy.

That's exactly what I needed.
They helped me every step of the way, from installation
to my daily tasks. I compared the cost, and I was sold!
