PResIDent's MessAGe Inspiring Better Projects and Safer Worksites acknowlEdging thE Extraordinary outcomEs of our members' efforts never By CHuCK GReCO aGC PReSIDenT As the only national commercial construction association that represents the entire construction industry, we are in a unique position to gather lessons from across the country on successful practices and share them. @Constr uctor Ma g ceases to motivate me. Most of society is not a part of our industry and not conditioned to understand all that we do as constructors, not to mention recognizing when we are achieving extraordinary results. How many times are your completed projects given welldeserved recognition in the press for their design innovation or business opportunities with little to no mention of the builder's contribution? Throughout my career I have found the AGC local and national award programs to be a place where we can test the relevance of our achievements with our peers and receive recognition for when we excel. There is a lot all of us have to learn from J.P. Cullen and The W.B. Moore Company. As winners of our association's two most prestigious awards, the Alliant Build America Grand Award and the Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards Grand Prize respectively, these two firms have mastered what it takes to build outstanding projects and create safe and healthy work environments. J.P. Cullen won the Grand Award for its work building the Epic Deep Space Auditorium outside of Madison, Wisconsin. The Auditorium is located 73 feet below ground and blends with the rural landscape with a rock- and cave-like façade and six acres of green roofing. The initial concept of a 7,500-seat, 405,000-sq-ft auditorium quickly grew to an 11,400-seat, 800,000-sqft facility with additional conference, training and office space. Despite these challenges, J.P. Cullen delivered the project successfully, safely and on schedule. Meanwhile, The W.B. Moore Company was selected as this year's Grand Prize winner because of its exceptional leadership in safety. The company is dedicated to the development and implementation of a premier safety and loss prevention program. In addition, the company presented outstanding guidance in safety and occupational health management, risk control, safety training, work site hazard identification and control and safety program innovation. Of course it is exciting for both firms to win these prestigious awards. And while we take a lot of joy as an association in recognizing the accomplishments of our peers, we have a much broader purpose in mind with both the Alliant Build America Awards and the Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards. That broader purpose is to identify the unique skills and specific techniques firms use to build successful projects and accomplished safety programs and share those lessons within our membership and throughout the industry. It is because we want others to learn from these outstanding firms and the work they are doing that we spend so much time throughout the year focusing on their accomplishments. During the coming months, you will read about many of these firms and their projects in the pages of this magazine. Meanwhile, we share information about all the award winners (in the spirit of full disclosure I should note that my firm won both a Build America and a Construction Safety Excellence Award this year) with media across the country. And just this year we initiated what we expect will be an annual white paper series exploring the lessons that can be learned from the various Alliant Build America Award winners. Our hope is this new series will offer the same kind of insights that the annual white paper on the Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards already offers its readers. These two awards programs are yet another example of how AGC of America is working today for a better industry tomorrow. As the only national commercial construction association that represents the entire construction industry, we are in a unique position to gather lessons from across the country on successful practices and share them. And by doing so, we want to inspire other firms to be equally as successful. Our ultimate goal is for every construction worker to be safe and every project to be amazing. ◆ Ma y / J u n e 2 0 1 5 | www.constructormagazine.com 11 http://www.constructormagazine.com
