2013 Liberty Mutual Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards PRESENTED ANNUALLY TO CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS THAT epitomize the principles of partnering and the successful collaborations that work to improve construction projects, the Liberty Mutual Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards are bestowed upon AGC member fi rms in good standing that stand out for their proficiency in the following areas: achieving a common goal, honoring all stakeholders, resolving confl ict, improving communication on the project with all audiences, celebrating joint successes, incorporating team-building activities, and most importantly perpetuating the partnering process. 2013 WINNERS OLD US80 AT GILA RIVER BRIDGE, HISTORIC BRIDGE REHABILITATION ARLINGTON, ARIZONA HAYDON BUILDING CORP The Historic Old US80 Gila River Bridge was built in 1926 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge spans the Gillespie Da m, bet ween Arlington and Gila Bend, Arizona, and required replacement and renovation of the trust structure and pier foundations, bank protection, and emporary access roads. The team addressed bridge deficiencies and corroded anchorages, and replaced roller bearings locked in place by corrosion, all while protecting and preserving Cliff Swallow nests located beneath the bridge. The partnering process helped to deliver the project in only 90 days, which required expediting material delivery, traffic control restrictions and construction sequencing. In order to maximize daytime working conditions, Haydon developed a plan to work seven days a week using single, partial lane closures for operations taking place on the bridge deck. An additional time-saver was an early agreement to address issue resolution measures within two days, instead of weeks, as allowed by the contract. This project was completed on time and under budget, and successfully maintained the historic look of the bridge. 54 constructor | JU LY/ AU G U ST 2013 SR-114 GENEVA ROAD DESIGN-BUILD OREM, UTAH KIEWIT The completed SR-114 Geneva Road project is a high-capacity, beautifully landscaped, pedestrian-friendly corridor. What was once an industrial road is now a safe and multimodal transportation system, boasting three additional travel lanes, a bike lane, and a walking path. Kiewit coordinated an extensive public and business outreach program to keep the nearby businesses and residents informed of changing traffic patterns, road closures and detours, and planned utility outages. As the widened Geneva Road was slated to serve as a critical detour route for Interstate 15, which was also under construction, it was imperative that the project be completed on time. The completed project allows for more efficient traffic flow, and includes a number of aesthetic upgrades, including decorative lighting, textured and colored walls, and landscaping. Finally, this expansion has created opportunities for developers, residences and business owners to further develop and enhance the corridor through master-planned communities and increased visitors to the area. 2013 SPECIAL RECOGNITION WEST MESQUITE INTERCHANGE DESIGN-BUILD MESQUITE, NEVADA W. W. CLYDE & CO. The West Mesquite Interchange project in Mesquite, Nevada, utilized accelerated bridge construction to replace both the north and southbound I-15 bridges, and added a lane to Falcon Ridge Parkway. All parties involved agreed to work together to facilitate the project’s success, and allowed for amicable solutions to any issues. In fact, at the start of the project, W. W. Clyde & Co. brought the majority of the project stakeholders together for a day of formal partnering training, with a strong emphasis on the team’s partnership. This stakeholder group included Nevada Department of Transportation personnel, designers, city managers, the policy department, and environmental enforcement, to name a few. This approach allowed for quick resolution of issues, and led to completion of the project four days ahead of schedule and $10 million under budget. ◆
