The Real Detroit BY DAMIAN HILL VICE PRESIDENT, OPERATIONS, COMMUNICATIONS AND GOVERNMENT RELATIONS AGC OF MICHIGAN for Anyone outsIde of Michigan, Detroit is often a punchline. Like Cleveland to the south, not many people sing its praises. But what these people don't know is the renaissance that Detroit has gone through after being hit hard by the economy. In the fall of 2008 when the country experienced its second biggest economic downturn ever - Michigan and Detroit had already been on hard times. Jobs in construction and other industries were scarce and the economy was limping along. The Great Recession hit Michigan at a time when it could least afford it. While the rest of the country joined the party, Michigan and Detroit took another major hit. A brief history shows a city that survived a major race riot in 1943. The mass exodus of its population over time, losing nearly 60 percent of its residents. And the first major city in the United States to file for bankruptcy. Add high crime, @Constr uctor Ma g struggling city services, and urban blight and you'd think Detroit would not survive. But's that not Detroit nor Detroiters. It has an industrial Midwest strength about it whose spirit just won't die! Michigan and Detroit rallied after the Great Recession in a big way. The state's economy has been better divested in a multitude of industries at the same time the auto industry came roaring back. Jobs and growth began to return. Detroit picked up where it left off on its renaissance. Young professionals moving into the downtown areas, start-up businesses locating downtown, old buildings being restored for many commercial interests. Motown, the Motor City, The D - you can knock us down, but not out! Detroit's much-loved professional sports teams (yes, even the Lions) have helped downtown development tremendously. Ford Field and Comerica Park are downtown landmarks that have created numerous adjacent businesses and added a vitality to the city. And now comes the arena project, a new home for the Detroit Red Wings, and its added development will further bolster the city. Restaurants, retail, hotels and more will make their home in Detroit near the new arena. It's far from perfect and Detroit will continue to have some problems. But rather than poke fun at us, come on up and take a look for yourself. See firsthand what is going on in one of our country's most storied cities. We could have closed up shop and moved on, but we didn't! We chose to invest in our city and our state. We chose to stay and make it a better place. We are Henry Ford and Bob Seger. We are Tom Selleck and Kid Rock. We are Steve Ballmer and Diana Ross. We are Detroit and we wouldn't have it any other way! ◆ J u l y / A u g u s t 2 0 1 5 | www.constructormagazine.com 23 http://www.constructormagazine.com
