And like Smith, Garrett believes it can't
start too early.
"At the universities where we recruit,
the women and minority population in
civil engineering and building construction curriculums are less than 10 percent,"
he notes. "We are already attracting many
of the candidates we want, but there aren't
enough in the program. We need to do a
better job of demonstrating that we welcome diverse students-otherwise those
students are going to go into programs
where they feel more wanted."

OPEN YOUR MIND
Garrett's suggestion of "honest dialogue" would likely strike a chord with
Henry Nutt III.
As Nutt sat in an emotional intelligence class for the construction industry,
he wondered whether he should open
his mouth. He listened to the concerns of
some of his white, male counterparts in a
discussion about diversity and admitted to
an internal struggle. Then one gentleman's
comments made the decision for him, and
he cleared his throat to speak.
"I could say you were a racist or
closed-minded," he says, "but instead
I'm going to say this: we're different.
We have different experiences. And I'm
not going to knock you just because you
are more comfortable hiring white men.
That's what you know. It's what you've
experienced your whole life. Just like
there are things I have experienced my
whole life. And so it doesn't make you
racist because you chose to hire someone
that looks like you. However, we have to
learn how to open our minds to change..."
Nutt bucks that "whitest job in America"
trend. He works as the sheet metal general
superintendent for Southland Industries,
a member of multiple AGC chapters, in its
Northern California division. And he is
African-American. He comes from a trendbucking legacy, in fact; his dad worked as
a sheet metal worker, too.
Thirty years ago, when Nutt's class of
25 or so people came into the trade, no
programs recruited minorities.
"It was probably more of how to not
get them into the business, to be honest
with you," he says.
Hard work, though, as his father taught
him, does pay off. He built his foreman
skills at a construction company where

there were a handful of African-American
men and women, and now he does his
part volunteering with CityBuild, a nonprofit that prepares underprivileged San
Francisco residents for employment in
the trades.
While CityBuild has been successful, he
admits that without a compliance requirement, companies do not have incentive to
go into minority neighborhoods or school
districts. Ultimately, it boils down to the
leadership and the importance they place
on diversity.
"I wouldn't have known about the
trades if it wasn't for my dad," he admits.
And the intimidation goes both ways.
"For one group it might be scary-this is
a bad neighborhood-when for another it
is comforting because they know it, they
know the people. That person can walk
into a neighborhood-or a company-and
be intimidated because there is no one to
accept them, to make them feel welcome. If
there is no one on the wall or the website
or the marketing materials who looks like
me, that can be very intimidating."
Hard work, he says, help breaks down
those barriers. And it's mandatory.
"Because of my background," he says,
"I am going to be able to reach out and

reach back and give people opportunities
that they might not necessarily get-but
that doesn't mean they get a hand-out. I've
had to fire people who felt they should be
here because they look like me. It doesn't
work that way. It's about hiring the best
people. And the best people are a collage.
They are not one person or one group."
And to the man in his class, the white
colleague with questions about how to
move forward in a world of many colors,
he had the following to say:
"It's time to realize that there is a
wealth of information and experience out
there, and maybe it looks different on the
surface, but we have the same goals and
desires to be successful as anyone else.
We may offer a different perspective to
make your company better."
He urges the industry to "embrace the
change."
Much like Abbott, he believes young
workers want to see themselves in the
companies for which they choose to work.
"Seeing the faces of people who don't
even necessarily look like you-but other
minorities-speaks volumes about the
kind of people who run that business,"
he offers. "You know you have a chance.
