Fieldwire Takes Plan Viewing to Another Level
BY DEBRA WOOD

MORE THAN 50,000 PROJECTS world-

wide use Fieldwire daily to save time and
money by quickly viewing current plans
and managing tasks during construction.
"It lets us keep one set of plans that is
always up to date," says Jerome Sarkinen,
a superintendent with Tapani of Battle
Ground, Washington, a member of Oregon
Columbia Chapter. Tapani has been using
Fieldwire for about two years to keep a
live set of drawings at the fingertips of
field crews.
"It is faster, more efficient and cuts
down on mistakes made by not having the
latest revision of plans handy," Sarkinen
says. "It allows you to get multiple levels
of approval for task completion."
Fieldwire lets contractors upload all of
the plan documents from a computer, Box
or Dropbox. From those storage repositories, Fieldwire will automatically pull
the latest plans, thus keeping everything
updated, so everyone is working off the
same, most current plans.
"It takes plan viewing to another
level," says Edward Farraye with
Fieldwire of San Francisco.
The software hyperlinks between
drawings and allows users to assign
tasks and set priorities from inside the
drawings. Related tasks can be linked
together. Users can redline drawings
while in the field, add highlights or
arrows and insert comments.
Tapani also uses Fieldwire to take
photos and link them to the plans. It
allows the user in the field to make markups on the photograph and assign punchlist tasks by trade. The project manager
can pull a report and quickly see all of
the tasks completed that day and what
remains to be done.
The information can be sorted in different ways by phases, designer discipline or subject. For instance, so all water
lines are in one section and all storm lines

@Constr uctor Ma g

in another. People can develop their own
customized templates and reports.
"Everyone uses Fieldwire in their own
way," Farraye says. "The platform is flexible, and it can be adapted in different
ways."
Fieldwire includes scheduling software to manage a three-week look forward. It will import a task list through
Excel and then move the work around
as needed. All of the information is sent
to all team members, so everyone knows
what everyone else is doing and their
responsibilities. Fieldwire also tracks
man hours and costs incurred performing a task. All of the data collected can
be searched.
Fieldwire is designed for mobile
devices, such as iPads, iPhones and
Android smartphones. It also can be
viewed on a desktop computer. Changes
to a task can be made offline and the
information will sync when the device
reconnects to the Internet.

People typically require minimal
instruction to start using Fieldwire.
General contractors can invite their subcontractors to use the software at no cost
to the sub.
A free trial allows contractors to try
Fieldwire with 10 users, five projects and
250 sheets of drawings. The Pro plan is
$29 per month per user with unlimited
projects, sheets of drawings and reports.
Additional plans add more functionality and support. Fieldwire estimates the
software saves more than five hours per
week per user.
"You can get into it inexpensively and
explore how you use it," Sarkinen says.◆
