INSIDE AGC What is Your Plan for Giving this Holiday Season? BY SCOTT WILLIAMS, CHAIR, AGC CHARITIES ROBERT BOWEN, CHAIR, AGC EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION WITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON fast approaching, many of us are already busy making plans to visit family and friends, take muchneeded vacations and enjoy holiday celebrations. In all the commotion, it's easy to lose sight of two of the most important holiday traditions: being thankful for what you have and giving to others. In that spirit, we hope you'll consider giving to our two charitable organizations, AGC Charities and AGC Education and Research Foundation. Both programs aim to help people in need, invest in the future of our industry, and shine a light on the generosity of our workers. the skillsets of students across America, strengthen the quality our workforce and build a brighter future for our industry. If you'd like to contribute to the AGC Education and Research Foundation, please visit or use the envelope included in this issue of Constructor. AGC Charities, founded in 2009, has spent the last six years organizing and supporting philanthropic projects in communities around the country. Each year during the AGC convention, the group completes projects through the Operation Opening Doors program, which harnesses the talents and resources of our workforce to improve the lives of veterans and the disabled community. In 2015, Operation Opening Doors partnered with contractors in San Juan, Puerto Rico to rebuild the home of a partially wheelchair-bound army veteran whose house was looted, forcing him to live in a backyard shack. And in 2014, Operation Opening Doors worked with Las Vegas contractors to build a new facility that offers horseback riding and animal care programs to veterans, first responders and their families. If you'd like to contribute to AGC Charities and enable future Operation Opening Doors projects, please visit There's no better time of year to give to others, and the AGC Education and Research Foundation and AGC Charities are very worthwhile causes. Thanks to contributions from AGC members and supporters, these programs will continue to improve our industry, strengthen communities and make a positive difference in people's lives. ◆ Thanks to the AGC Education & Research Foundation, Dr. Hisham Said (left), associate professor, Santa Clara University, served as a faculty intern with Blach Construction Company (BCC), and gained key field experience that he brought back to his students. The Foundation, founded in 1968, supports the future of the industry by providing construction scholarships and investing in industry-related research projects. Through endowments made by AGC members and supporters, as well as AGC chapters, the Foundation is able to give 100 or more undergraduate and graduate scholarships each year to deserving students. Since 1970, we have awarded over 3,500 scholarships totaling over $10 million. This year the Foundation initiated a new workforce development scholarship with the help of NCCER to benefit students in craft and technical training. The first 19 of these scholarships were awarded in August. 2016 also saw the continuation of the very successful faculty internship program, with seven faculty members working with AGC contractors during the summer months, later bringing their enhanced knowledge back to their students. There are few more important gifts to receive than the gift of a quality education. Donations to the Foundation will help broaden @Constr uctor Ma g Volunteer contractors, under the leadership of Desarrollos Metropolitanos, rebuilt the San Juan home of wheelchair-bound veteran Jose Quinonez as part of AGC Charities' Operation Opening Doors project in March 2015.
