charitable gifts, I hope you will consider the association's two charitable institutions: AGC
Charities Inc. and the AGC Education & Research Foundation. Both of these groups have
built impressive track records investing in our communities and the future of our industry.
With the approach of our centennial year, and with the busy hurricane season we have had,
there is ample opportunity - and reason - to give to these two groups this holiday season.
Even though AGC Charities is less than a decade old, it has already established a new AGC
of America tradition; organizing its Autodesk Operation Opening Doors projects in conjunction
with our annual convention. Since its first project in 2010, AGC Charities has worked with
member firms to donate repairs to facilities that support families with sick children, centers
that serve the disabled, after school programs that work with at-risk youth and groups that
help homeless citizens rebuild their lives. The group has also helped build a new equestrian
center for returning veterans and a water park designed for children with disabilities.
Meanwhile, the AGC Education & Research Foundation, which will celebrate its 50th
anniversary next year, has a long history of providing college scholarships for students preparing for careers in construction. Since 2011, the foundation has awarded grants to faculty,
sponsoring summer residencies at AGC member construction firms; supported the development
of industry case studies; and expanded its scholarship offerings to cover students attending
career and community colleges. In other words, the foundation has been investing in our
industry's future for nearly half a century.
Both of these philanthropic groups have special plans to help honor our centennial that
could definitely benefit from your support. The Consulting Constructors' Council (CCC) will
host a special benefit gala for the AGC Foundation during the annual convention in New
Orleans at the end of February at the National World War II Museum. It will also host the
foundation's annual Bill Ratz Memorial Golf Tournament on the afternoon of Feb. 28 at the
end of the convention. Registration for both events is already open and can be found at
convention.agc.org.
Meanwhile, AGC Charities will organize its annual Autodesk Operation Opening Doors
project during our New Orleans convention. It will also organize its most ambitious project ever
to coincide with our Oct. 1 centennial celebration. With the help of lead general contractor
Davis Construction, AGC Charities will renovate a historic dairy barn in Maryland to serve
as the new national headquarters of the Warrior Canine Connection. The group works with
recovering veterans to train service dogs for their fellow wounded veterans. Once finished, the
new facility will help Warrior Canine Connection help many more veterans across the country.
And of course, AGC Charities is working with our chapters in Texas and other areas affected
by this season's significant hurricanes to provide relief for members of the AGC family. As the
holidays approach, AGC Charities will be distributing relief assistance grants to employees
of member firms and AGC chapters who sustained significant damages during the storms
that won't be covered by insurance or other forms of support.
There are many worthwhile causes that deserve our support, and I appreciate that we can
only contribute so much to so many groups. But if you care about our industry's support for our
communities and the future of our industry, then contributing to AGC Charities and the AGC
Education & Research Foundation should be a no-brainer this holiday season - please.
