typically incorporate a base shoe. The glass
panel is held in place through a sealant-free
locking system.
Industry Standards
ASTM has published two standards on
glass railings. The test method is ASTM
E2353; the specification is ASTM E2358.
These standards are available for purchase
on the ASTM website. The latest standard
to be published in Canada is the Canadian
Standards Association (CSA) A500 Guard
standard. Published in 2016, the Canadian

standard covers design, testing, materials,
and installation of guards in buildings.
Conclusion
As laminated glass railings expand in
the marketplace, it is important for fabricators and installers to have information on
the technical properties of laminates and
compatibility of materials coming in contact with the glass. This understanding will
help to eliminate problems after installation,
enabling long-term performance of the glass
railing system.

currently allow post-fabrication polishing of
glass edges. However, this option is available
from some fabricators.

INSTALL FASTER THAN EVER
TRULY SAVE TIME
Q-railing's Easy Glass Slim makes it simple for you to install a glass railing. It has pre-drilled
mounting holes in its ultra-slender base shoe and features the unique Safety Wedge System.

Durability
Laminated glass is a highly durable product
offering years of defect-free performance. It
is important to note that continuous moisture
exposure for extended periods of time can
cause the interlayer to lose adhesion and
delaminate. This may initially appear as a
blush around the edge of the glass. In railing systems where the glass is installed in
a channel, the channel must be filled with a
compatible and non-moisture absorbing sealant or grout. Designs with a top cap or bead
must be designed to evacuate water. When
dry-glazed systems are used, consideration
must still be given to ensure that water entering the channel is drained away.
Historically, Portland cement, epoxy, or
gypsum-based grout has been used to fix
the bottom edge of glass in the glazing channel. After a review of the technical literature
and inspections of field failure, we no longer recommend the use of Portland cement
in contact with laminated glass. There are
sealants/grouts that have been tested with
laminated glass and shown to be compatible.
One such sealant, especially designed for
glass railings, is a two-part polyurethane
grout from Sika that has been tested and
found to be compatible with both PVB and
Ionoplast interlayers.
One way to avoid sealant incompatibility
is to install a dry-glazed system. These systems do not use sealants or grouts during the
installation process, nor is there a concern
for a chemical reaction between the interlayer and the sealant. Dry-glazed systems
