METALMOMENT Just "Bee-Cause" ROB GLEBE living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I have no shortage of inspiration for new work. My home and studio are located on six acres that were once farm fields. Aside from a modest house and large workshop, the property has given me a blank slate for designing and creating a welcoming landscape. I have set aside two acres as a sculpture garden and enjoy the process of shaping the area, planting trees and shrubs along with creating sculptures for this site. My first sculpture for this site was a Torii gate, inspired by a trip to Japan. This entry to the garden is 10 feet tall with open work steel columns that have a curved open work steel structure resting across the top. Each column and the top structure are filled with large river bed stones. It seemed massive in my shop and retains its grandeur in place. The property gives me lots of opportunity to be outside, planting and pruning. I find the time spent doing this to be relaxing. I absorb so much from being outdoors, and it is reflected in my art work. Plus, a good break in the yard will often result in a design solution or resolution to a problem that I didn't even know I was still thinking about. My experiences in the gardens have inspired many of the open work vessels that began my metal art career back in 2005. Having collected vessels for many years and being drawn to the classic lines and amazing variety available, I searched for what I could offer that would be unique. I tried my hand at some woodturning and pottery classes, but with my background as a toolmaker and fabrication skills from my time owning a yacht service, I decided to focus on metal vessels. I came up with techniques to build an open formed vessel using multiple cuts and shapes that are welded together. The vessels are not all representational; some are abstract and loosely formed. Experimenting with metal stains, acrylic paints and even high quality crayons have given the vessels and my wall art both subtle and sensational color. I'm that guy who brings home rocks and leaves from PHOTO CREDIT FOR BEE-CAUSE SCULPTURE TO STEVEN BUCHANAN AS A METAL ARTIST July/August 2016 * O&MM Fabricator | 45
