an apprentice should have at every stage of
his or her apprenticeship, year after year. To
shop owners, the book recommended that
apprentices were to be the future of the shop
owner's shop and the future of the trade.
"Where are the qualified workers?" was
not a question they asked themselves as they
knew that they would find them only in their
own activity. If we do not sow our field, we
should not expect any sort of harvest.
So let me introduce myself-I am Jacky
Dupont, one of the workers who came to the

United States 33 years ago with a French company, Les Metalliers Champenois (LMC), to
make the new torch of the Statue of Liberty
in New York City. In 1986, a few weeks after
the completion of this famous project, I came
back with a few coworkers to get LMC Corp
started in Patterson, New Jersey. I stayed
with my team until 2007 when my friend Franck
Chartrain asked me to join his small team that
he had created under the name of La Forge de
Style, or LFDS, in South Hackensack, New
Jersey, at spitting distance of New York City.

Like most of the members of this team, I am
a member of the French traditional guild: Les
Compagnons du Devoir. I know a few readers of
this article will be familiar with Les Compagnons.
My friend John Herzog, an American scholar
who spent years studying Les Compagnons as
an outsider of the guild, has written the following:
The guild of Les Compagnons is an old tradition anchored in history. Still, today it is very
alive and even more alive than ever. Back in
the 18th century, the guild was a way to learn
a trade and also to defend affiliated workers
against the abuse of their employers. It was
very similar to today's American Unions.
Let me quickly analyze the specifics of
this organization:
Back in the Middle Ages when it started, the
goal was to organize the workers in categories
according to their level of qualification, while
supporting one another as a back bone principle. The real cement keeping the members
together was a fraternity-minded concept,
and the main message from the elders to the
next generation was the following:
1. Travel adds diversity to your professional
experience.
2. Because you travelled, you know more
than the one who never left his village
3. Because you have travelled in the past, you
are not afraid to hit the road if this place does
not give you what it should or what you want.
4. If you do not know, we will teach you. When
you meet a young person in the trade, it will
be your duty to support, help and teach him
(or her). What you know does not belong to
you; it is yours only for now, and then you
will have to pass it on.
5. You will travel in an orderly manner as
decided by the guild. You are free, but
within the context of the guild rules that
you will respect.
6. If you are in need, we will help you. In
return, you will help others.
7. Work and skills will set you free, but ignorance is a jail.
And so on, and so on.
Of this short analysis, one can retain a trio
of the most common words:
* TRAVEL that educates you by the vector
of diversity;
* FREEDOM that you get from your knowledge
as a direct result of the diversity you were
exposed to by your travels; and
* KNOWLEDGE that you get by belonging to
a helpful family that is here to teach you
among other things (the guild you belong to).
