Tips
LED systems are largely maintenance free, with a high level of
reliability. If there is an issue with a component, it will generally be
known during the early burn-in. Like all other handrails, illuminated
rails must be cleaned occasionally if in an urban or ocean environment.
The only caution is that if a solvent or passivation agent is used it can
react poorly with the lensing on the lights. Power washing rails should
be avoided. Lighted handrails are UL-rated for wet locations but not
rated for the jet spray of a power washer, and most manufacturers
will not warranty a fixture that has failed due to submersion in water.
For specifying, it is helpful to engage the light manufacturer early
in the process with a set of plan and elevation drawings. Drawings
should detail the fixture number, placement, count and color, as well
as power entry. Technical personnel at the factory will be able to guide
power placement, fixture selection and fabrication requirements. It's
important to know desired light levels. Various requirements must be
met based on site location, 1-3 footcandle (FC) average is required
for general pedestrian paths, but 10 FC may be required for stairs
and ramps. Ultimately, specific codes and the AHJ will govern the
requirements.
If you're looking at lens options, a clear lens with a tight beam spread
may be used to achieve a thin ribbon of light along a path. An opaque
lens with a wide beam will not be as bright on the ground, but will cast
a smooth glow across a wide area.

Overall, you absolutely should not mix systems. Go with one supplier for all your gear so it's only one call to address any issues and
avoid warranty issues.
Tools
Railings are fabricated per normal shop fabrication practices. Drilling
holes in a rail for the point-source products is much easier with a
high-quality annular cutter. Drills bits cannot handle the diameters
required and can yield an oversized or irregular hole, and hole saws
can chatter too much when cutting through round profiles. Heat is
the enemy of a cutter, so use a good quality cutting fluid and low feed
rates. If the point-source product requires a tapped hole, make sure the
manufacturer offers a good jig for the threading operation. Fabricating
for the linear light sticks also requires a familiarity with heavy-wall to
thin-wall weld schedules. Back-gassing the weld joints helps eliminate
burn-through issues, as do weld backing rings. These joints can often
require additional finishing steps to blend the weld joints.
On the electrical side, investing in simple electrical tools will help.
An AC/DC power meter, wire strippers, needle-nose and lineman's
pliers, electrical fish tape, and silicone adhesive, if it's required, will
help you do the job the right way.
A lighting designer is an often-overlooked "tool." Engaging a
designer for lighting calculations can help model the space quickly
and without tremendous expense. He or she can provide both the
fabricator and the customer with a common understanding and align
expectations for the project.

Benefits
Overall, illuminated handrail lighting is a great way to put light
where it's needed most, while accentuating design and not detracting from it. And thanks to advancements in technology, it's now
more affordable than ever. Even "museum-grade" quality can be
within reach for some of the simplest projects. It affords a high
quality output at a low wattage, which can aid in achieving various
environmental status goals-be it a LEED certification or individualized company goals. Add in the overarching benefit of safety for
the end user, and handrail lighting can be the perfect solution to
many, many problems.
