PRESIDENT'SLETTER

NOMMA Supplier Members Supporting Us Then and Supporting Us Now
Thank You NOMMA Supplier Members!
CATHY VEQUIST
SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, I had the opportunity

of viewing the digital version of the first issue
of the National Ornamental Iron Fabricator
Magazine (dated March/April 1959), a 16-page
magazine that came out a year after NOMMA
was founded and following the first trade
show. It included a cover photo of a fabricator's pretty wife and photos of the board members (Frank Kozik, President). It also featured
an article about the trade show with mentions
of Julius Blum, the Hossfeld Universal Iron
Bender, Por-Rock and others. It reminded me
of all the work required of volunteers to form
this association and the foundation of success
leading to our 60th anniversary next year.
This month, I want to give a special call out
to perhaps the least thanked NOMMA members and key participants in our industry: the
Suppliers. They provide us with the materials,
components, equipment and services that
are the raw pieces allowing us to complete
our magic of transforming them into artistic
metal work, fantastic ornamental railings,
gates, stairs, and the many miscellaneous
and structural products we provide to meet
our clients' needs for timely and high quality products. Yet, often we see Suppliers as
merely businesses, making money from our
purchases, and we don't think any further
about what they do for us, beyond meeting
our immediate needs.
What we may not bother to consider is that
they are working hard to have their products
available to us exactly when we need them
(not an easy calculation to get right). They
are working hard to assure that their quality remains high, while their pricing remains
reasonable. They are working to source their

materials or products from others who are
reliable, innovative and trustworthy.
These suppliers sometimes provide us that
sigh of relief (thank heavens, they have just
what we need - they can deliver it in time!),
and sometimes they provide us with that frustrated frown (your lead times don't match
my customer's expectations). But always,
they are trying to improve their products
and services.
At this point, I must confess that I have a
special passion for suppliers in the industry.
I came to the ornamental industry after a
20-year career spanning product development, sales and marketing in companies that
manufactured products and equipment for
the printing industry. I have done my share
of figuring out product pricing, lead times,
how to reach customers through direct mail,
brochures and magazine advertising, how to
juggle multiple association trade shows, how
to exceed (or at least meet) our customers'
needs, and of course, make a profit.
I have a feel for the demands on these businesses and what it takes to be successful.
Then, consider the suppliers who are also
active NOMMA members and volunteers. You
can see how much more they provide us than
their products and services.
You see the suppliers who provide us great
amounts of knowledge - in their responses to
questions on ListServ about codes, materials
and finishes. You see it in the way they spend
time with us in our shops and at our trade
show, not only educating us on their products,
but also pointing out opportunities for additional business in areas/products we had not
yet considered. You see it in their commitment

to additional time spent at Chapter meetings,
NEF's continuing education sessions, and
presenting education at METALfab. You see
it in the resources they provide NOMMA by
participating in our trade show, sponsoring our
events, contributing to NEF, and advertising
in our magazine and online.
As I have volunteered more of my time with
NOMMA, at the state level and now with the
Board of Directors, I have also come to see
the immense amount of time that our supplier
member volunteers spend to help NOMMA
continue to grow and prosper through assistance at the Chapter level, their work on committees, as well as serving on the NOMMA
Board - providing new and different perspectives and their company resources that many
of us cannot easily provide.
The level of commitment and passion that
NOMMA suppliers have for our association
is truly legendary. One of the advertisements
in that first issue of the Fabricator especially
caught my eye - it was an ad for Lawler
Machine & Foundry Co., Inc., in Birmingham,
Alabama. Why did it catch my eye? The week
before I received a personally written note,
thanking me for my service, the expectation
of good things to come for NOMMA, as well as
an offer of assistance for anything we might
need was from Stan Lawler!
If I haven't already given you enough reasons to support our NOMMA supplier members, please consider supporting them with
your business. Give them the thanks and
appreciation they are due. They have been
a huge part of NOMMA's history and are key
to NOMMA's future and the success of all
our members.
