The Power of One

METALfab in
Galveston, Texas, in 2002 - about eight months
after starting our metalworking business and
joining NOMMA. Frankly, that convention was
a little disorienting. We were so new to the
business and industry that while we listened
and learned, we also still walked away with
as many questions as answers.
When we attended our second METALfab
in Covington, Kentucky, in March 2003, we had
experienced enough growing pains to begin
thinking about the biggest issues confronting
us. We were doing a little bit of everything -
providing welding repairs inside air craft fuel
tanks; trying to learn how to do a better job
of installing curved stair railings; making little
tables for interior designers; working with
contractors on bigger residential projects;
providing automated gate systems; and doing
repairs on anything metal that anyone would
bring us. We were, as Roger Carlsen infamously states "AFAB" (anything for a buck).
And, although we were covering our costs,
we didn't feel like we were moving forward
in a meaningful direction.
And then, an amazing thing happened. That
year, we attended an education session (a
shop tour presentation) by Frank Finelli of
WE ATTENDED OUR FIRST

Finelli Architectural Iron and Stairs. As he
discussed his shop and his business, I suddenly realized that his concept for marketing,
his concept for his showroom, and his focus
on specific customers was a possible strategic path forward for us in the Palm Beach
market. The energy of that one idea caused
us to immediately start making changes - in
our showroom, in our focus on certain clients (as well as "firing" other clients), and
on improving our quality in our products
and installations.
It was the "Power of One" - one idea,
in one 60-minute education class, at one
METALfab - that fueled a significant shift in
our business focus.
Over the years, we have harvested many
"Power of One" ideas that provided us with
ways to be more profitable, with higher quality,
with less effort, and less exposure to liability. I
could easily name 20 people and the meaningful ideas they passed along to us, only to worry
about not listing the next 100 who did the same.
We have been repeatedly astounded by how
much value we receive for our membership
dues, just from these ideas.
NOMMA offers so many ways to harvest the
"Power of One": a single Chapter Meeting, one

NEF Continuing Education session, one question answered on ListServ or in a Roundtable,
one telephone call, or even one conversation
in the hallway at METALfab.
The essential truth is that NOMMA members have an incredible willingness to freely
give of their own knowledge - knowledge
that has oftentimes been gained at a great
cost to themselves. And when the "Power of
One" idea is multiplied by the totality of our
membership, that knows so much about various aspects of our industry, the result is an
exceedingly special and valuable association
for all our members.
If you are a NOMMA member, then I would
challenge you to discover how you can harness your "Power of One". And I would also
encourage you to continue to be the contributor of your knowledge, and those ideas, that
will inspire others to change their business
(and who will still be amazed by what you
shared 15 years later).
If you are not a NOMMA member, then I
encourage you to join and take advantage of
this fabulous community, that is eager to help
you succeed. And like us, you will find that the
value you receive in the "Power of One" will
be astounding!
