BE PUNCTUAL
STEP
In
the world of journalism, deadlines are

everything. So, being on time for your
interview is of the utmost importance. It is
better to be 15 minutes early than five minutes late.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Once
you establish your key message, it's
3
crucial to practice, practice, practice... and
then practice some more. Develop a list of questions that you would ask if you were the reporter.
Don't forget to include some challenging ones!
Then, ask a friend, colleague or family member to play reporter and ask you the questions.
When preparing for the hard questions, think
of ways to shift the conversation back to your
main talking points. The more you practice, the
more comfortable you will become at serving as
a spokesperson for media interviews.

sure to tag the outlet in your post! Journalists
love when interviewees promote their content
because it helps them garner more views, which
is ultimately how their success is measured.
The good news is you don't have to go at all
of this alone, either. There are media talking
points and other industry media resources
available to you on PPMAMainframe.org.  ●

ESTABLISH YOUR
2 INTERVIEW STRATEGY
The most important step in preparing
for an interview is to identify your key message. Think about the number one thing you
want to convey. For the interview with NBC,
your key message would be that partnering
with a pest control professional like yourself is crucial to preventing and eradicating
rodent problems.
It's also good practice to establish other
talking points to help support your overall
message. Here are three supporting points to
consider for the NBC interview:
1. Rodents are very active in the fall, as they
seek food and shelter from the impending
winter weather.
2. Rodents have been implicated in the spread
of disease, and their droppings are known
to trigger allergies and asthma.
3. Rodents can damage property by chewing
through wood, drywall and electrical wires,
which increases the potential risk for fires.
Consider putting these talking points into a
popular communications tool called the message triangle, which is a helpful visual guide
designed to help you stay on topic and drive
home key messages.
STEP

to speak with you to further solidify your relationship and improve the chances of getting a
call back. If you have multimedia assets readily available, such as photography, videos or
infographics to help support the story, now is
the time to offer them to the reporter. Also,
ask for an expected run date, so you can keep
an eye out for the piece.

FOLLOW UP
STEP
After
the interview has concluded, you
5
should send a follow-up email to the
reporter thanking him or her for taking time
