should take advantage of it. After all, your
competitors are probably receiving it.

Get the Most from
Classifications
In the ready mix concrete business, workers'
compensation classifications can be especially
complex and confusing. Because various states
have adopted exceptions to the NCCI's general classification methodology, errors in the
ready mix concrete business are common.

Compounding matters further, sometimes the classification with the lowest
rate does not result in the lowest premium.
Because classifications are a component of
the experience modifier and the CCPAP,
seeking lowest classification rate might
result in an unnecessarily higher premium.
Care should be taken and a knowledgeable
expert consulted when seeking to determine
the best available workers' compensation
classifications.

Another premium-saving suggestion is
to prepare a pre-audit for the annual audit.
When the insurer completes its annual
premium audit, it works from the records
that you provide. You can make the auditor's job easier by completing your own preaudit. Make certain that your audit takes
into account all the credits, limitations and
deductions available to your organization.
Many auditors will accept your work product
as their own.
Finally, when the audit is complete, ask
for a copy of the auditor's worksheets, review
the worksheets with him or her, discuss how
employees were classified and then compare
the final invoice to those worksheets.
If you have any questions about the experience modification, the CCPAP, or payrolls
and classifications, drop us a note. We have
been doing this kind of work since 1979.■
