conditions exist or are forecast to occur and then plan accordingly.
According to ACI 305R-10, adverse weather conditions for plastic
shrinkage cracking exist when the evaporation rate from a concrete
surface reaches a value of 0.2 lb/ft 2/h (1.0 kg/m 2/h), but may occur
at rates much lower than this depending on the mix design and
placement conditions (Hover).
The evaporation nomograph provides a non-computational
method to determine the evaporation rate from a water surface, or
rather bleed water above a fresh concrete surface, given the air temperature, concrete temperature and wind velocity. The nomograph,
which has been around since at least 1960 (Uno), can be found in a
number of publications, including those by ACI, NRMCA and the
Portland Cement Association. The nomograph allows the user to
solve what is otherwise a complicated formula, rapidly and without
the use of any electronic device. Today's computers and software
can serve the same function as the nomograph, making determination of the evaporation rate easier and much more quickly than
manual methods.
There are now a number of website calculators available to help
determine if weather conditions are unfavorable and likely to cause
plastic shrinkage cracks in concrete (just Google "plastic shrinkage
crack calculators"). One such website calculator was recently developed at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville by computer science
students working with the Construction Department faculty. The
calculator takes full advantage of today's technology, allowing the
user to determine the potential for unfavorable weather conditions up
to a week in advance of concrete placement. The calculator retrieves a
week's worth of hourly weather predictions from the NOAA National
