The Evolution of
ConcreteWorks
N
Robert Garbini, P.E.,
President, NRMCA

...concrete does
"work" quite
effectively as the
world's most versatile
building material
and NRMCA's
ConcreteWorks
does too, for our
attendees, exhibitors
and sponsors.

ot too many years ago, NRMCA
and its membership gathered each
fall for two separate events, the first
of which was the OES Forum & Expo. For
the uninitiated, this was association shorthand for the Operations, Environmental
and Safety Committee's annual gathering
of educational sessions on critical operations
issues and a concurrent (very) mini trade
show where a comfortable gathering of vendors promoted their products and services
to attendees. The second fall event was the
Business Administration (BAC) Conference
& Expo, held one month later. This event
was very similar in structure to the OES
Forum, but focused its education on management, IT, human resources and general
business topics.
Despite the relatively modest beginnings,
these events were always two of NRMCA's
most popular offerings on its calendar and
deservedly so. The format stayed relatively
the same each year, save for minor adjustments that any event must undergo to stay
relevant to its paying customers, in this case
our sponsors, members and industry personnel. But somewhere amid this stability was the
burgeoning awareness that each conference
was beginning to outgrow its original intent
and that our changing industry meant that
many of the same people needed the offerings
of each event. And that's a very good thing,
by the way.
Fast forward to late September 2017 and
turn your attention to the Dallas suburb of
Grapevine, TX. It's here that the successor
of these two events takes place. It's called,
simply and effectively we believe, NRMCA's
ConcreteWorks. And there's obviously no
extra charge for the double meaning in the
name. For concrete does "work" quite effectively as the world's most versatile building

material and NRMCA's ConcreteWorks does
too, for our attendees, exhibitors and sponsors.
In addition to the operations and business education, NRMCA's ConcreteWorks
has grown to include our national mixer
driver championship, a large-scale exposition hall full of industry equipment,
CONCRETEPAC events, NRMCA committee and Board of Directors' meetings,
keynote speaker address, additional educational tracks for promotion/sales and concrete
technology, and an awards ceremony. Not to
mention it is held in conjunction with the
American Concrete Pumping Association's
2017 Education Conference. I'd venture
to say that even if you've never attended
NRMCA's ConcreteWorks, you know someone who has. And I'm almost certain that
attendee came away ready to put to use the
knowledge he or she gained from one of those
educational sessions or even just networking
with industry colleagues.
Why am I telling you all this? A few reasons: partly to make you aware of one of the
industry's best success stories, the evolution of
two modest events into one branded, nationally known multifaceted, multi-day gathering of ready mix personnel, led by NRMCA
members and sponsors. And I also want you to
know that even if you don't attend NRMCA's
ConcreteWorks, its content flows through our
industry every day. In fact, the article that analyzes NRMCA's Fleet Benchmarking Survey
in this issue of Concrete InFocus was discussed
in depth at NRMCA's ConcreteWorks. There
are many more examples of relevant articles
in past issues of the magazine.
So, in short, concrete "works" for all of us.
And so does NRMCA's ConcreteWorks. We
look toward continually improving, evolving
and expanding the event so that it continues
to work for you!
