Rural Water - Quarter 1, 2013 - (Page 22)

MAKING A LEGISLATIVE IMPACT Let Your Voice Be Heard! The 2013 Rural Water Rally was held February 11-13 in Washington, D.C. STAND UP FOR Rural America! Every year NRWA promotes this message all across the nation. “Let your voice be heard” was the catalyst as over 500 rural water family members descended on Washington, D.C. and the congressional offices of Senators and Congress. NRWA President Doug Anderton opened the Rally, encouraging attendees to be seen and heard on “the hill” that week. He emphasized the need to build relationships with new representatives and to continue emphasizing Rural Water’s grassroots message. Special guests, Senator Mark Pryor from Arkansas and Rural Utilities Services Administrator John Padalino, both spoke of their long-term relationships with rural America. Senator Pryor has been an important supporter of Rural Water for many years and Padalino spent time employed by a water utility, working “in the trench” before his career took him to Washington, D.C. Both men are well aware of the issues facing Rural Water and are committed to assisting rural and small systems. The opening session also included “Memories” with NRWA CEO Rob Johnson and John Montgomery. Both were involved early in NRWA’s development and both are planning to retire at the end of 2013. The Rally is OUR most important tool in keeping Congress informed about the importance of Rural Water in America. The constant efforts of dedicated people within the Rural Water family and their leaders help us attain billions of dollars in loans, grants and programs that help provide clean, safe, quality and affordable water for millions of rural Americans. 22 • First Quarter 2013
