Water University: Taking Off the Brakes BY ShAnnon rASMuSSen, rurAl WAter ASSocIAtIon of utAh DiD you knoW it’s almost impossible to coax an 18-wheeler into going faster than 10 miles an hour when you have the emergency brake engaged? Weird. And of course I found that out the hard way the summer I worked on my uncle’s Montana farm. We were bringing in the hay one fine July day and my job, as luck would have it, was to operate heavy equipment. (Sound reasoning on Uncle Marvin’s part as I have only ever tuckand-rolled out of a vehicle which was no longer under my control twice in my life. Pretty good odds for an 18 year old, I’d say.) So, knowing my practically squeaky clean record, Uncle Marvin spent about 30 purposeful seconds going over the intricate details of driving an 18 wheeler. It was then my job to follow my temperchallenged cousin Bob around the field so he could load the one-ton bales onto the bed of my perfectly driven semi. 32 • Second Quarter 2013
