What's So
Scary about

Automatic
Pool Covers?
by Michael Shebek

HOW APCS WORK

In its simplest form, the automatic pool cover consists
of two parallel tracks, one on each side of the pool. Each
track has two channels that allow a rope to travel down the
poolside of the track, around a pulley at the track's end,
and then travel on the back side of that same track into a
housing. A vinyl pool cover is attached to the poolside rope
so that when the non-poolside rope is pulled, the cover is
drawn out over the pool. A tube is used to retract the pool
cover into that same housing.
The manufacturer's drive system determines: the speed
at which the system moves; how the cover stops at each end
of the pool; and the technology used to prevent damage if
the cover comes under stress during operation. For specific
details on how the various drive systems work, contact one
of the industry's four cover manufacturers.

POOL SAFETY

The main reason pool owners want a cover is for safety,
and the key reason they choose the automatic pool cover
is for convenience. Cover installers say that after the automatic cover installation, pool owners often tell them that
they chose an automatic pool cover for the convenience
of not having to manually remove a mesh cover each time
they wanted to use the pool. While seasonal safety covers
can be a good option, during the summer when not in use
they provide no safety. An automatic pool cover can be a
safety cover year round and operate with just the push
of a button.

APCS SAVE POOL OWNER MONEY

In addition to offering peace of mind, the APC furnishes
unrivaled savings to the pool owner. APCs help retain heat
when the pool isn't in use and keep chemicals and water from
evaporating (about 8,000 gallons of water throughout the year),
which together contribute to a reduction in the operational cost
of running the pool. Studies show that APCs on gas-heated pools
save approximately $2,000 in heating costs per year. Best of all,
the annual cost to operate an automatic cover is about $5 per year.

UNDERSTANDING CONVENIENCE

Today's consumers want maximum enjoyment from their
swimming pool investment. They do not want to work at maintaining it; they simply want to enjoy it. Understanding that customer reality is why the demand for APCs is rapidly growing.
In addition to opening and closing in less than one minute,
the product does not require the consumer to store a manual
safety cover in their garage, in their pool house or at the pool
company's warehouse.

COVER AESTHETIC OFTEN SEALS THE DEAL

Though it is not necessarily among the top reasons a pool
owner chooses an automatic pool cover, the product does have
an added aesthetic bonus in that it can "disappear" when the
cover is opened. This aesthetic appeal often "seals the deal"
of an APC on a new pool.
Pool professionals encourage customers to decide on an
automatic pool cover prior to the construction of the pool.

While seasonal safety covers can be a
good option, during the summer when
not in use they provide no safety. An
automatic pool cover can be a safety
cover year round and operate with just
the push of a button.

AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS are no longer
just an option on today's pools; instead they have become
a standard offering in many pool builder bids. With so
many consumers requesting easy-to-use automatic pool
covers (APCs) in larger numbers, here's a refresher on
why automatic covers might be scary to those who don't
understand them, but profitable to those who do.
