MEMBER PROFILE Thinking, Working, Growing: LEDCOR GROUP A company that has been expanding and diversifying for nearly 70 years has surely gained some business acumen along the way, and Ledcor Group's experience exemplifies its entrepreneurial roots. Founded in 1947 by William Lede (who secured the loan for his only bulldozer with a handshake), the company began by building supply roads for Canada's first oil well in Leduc, Alberta. The company has grown greatly since then, but maintains the principles that Mr. Lede insisted upon from the beginning: integrity, accountability, quality and customer service. Still headed today by Mr. 34 Lede's son Dave, Ledcor has become an industry leader in North America, not only in construction but in every aspect of its diversified business. "Ledcor isn't afraid to take intelligent risks," says Vice President/Regional Manager Gord Naylor, citing the factor that first attracted him to the company two-and-a-half years ago. He offers the example of a recent business expansion in Western Canada. Ledcor saw an opportunity in harvesting trees that have been damaged by the pine beetle that are not usable for traditional lumber. The company acquired Renew Resources, and commenced an operation to View this issue online at haul the damaged trees out of the forest, creating lumber from the salvageable sections and reducing the unusable parts to "hog fuel" which is burned in power generation plants to create energy, and wood chips which are used in the pulp and paper industry.
