The Generals - Fall/Winter 2016 - 11

INCOMING CHAIR'S MESSAGE By Frank Perricone The OGCA has been a strong voice in trying to work together with government and other buyers of construction to implement a system with processes that will help bridge the gap between the expectations of the buyers, consultants and contractors. very dynamic, exciting, challenging and fulfilling career that exposes you to a group of passionate, knowledgeable, hardworking people who develop into great leaders for our society, this is how I define the construction industry. The OGCA has been, and continues to be, a leader and strong voice for this great industry in Ontario. This year, in early September, at the Annual General Meeting in Washington, DC, I have the privilege of becoming the Chair, serving our members and working side by side with a great staff at the OGCA. During my term, in addition to the day to day duties, I look forward to promoting three major initiatives. 1. Safety and the cultural changes that are required by any organization to implement a successful safety program, 2. Working with our members, stakeholders and government to attract youth and other members of our society into the industry, and 3. Developing strong relationships and partnerships with industry stakeholders such as Architects, Consultants, Buyers of construction and Government, to work together to develop a fair and consistent process that will improve the way we build Ontario. Buy-in from senior management and redefining the cultural outlook on safety is the key to a successful safety program. It has been proven time and time again that a safe work place is a productive and profitable work place. But profitability should not be the driving force in promoting safety. Human life is. Ensuring that all our employees, contractors and personnel involved in every project, go home to their family and friends at the end of every work day. COR TM and the League of Champions are initiatives that the OGCA has helped develop and promote. These initiatives will help our members and our industry move forward to a safer work place. I will be encouraging and challenging all our members to become Champions of safety and to strive to achieve COR TM. In order for our industry to keep growing and be relevant with our changing society, we must promote ourselves so that we attract youth and other members of the society in which we live and work. This will not only help us deal with the shortage of skilled workers, but it will allow us to develop a work force that will be passionate and dedicated to their job and the society they live in. We will continue to work with Schools, Colleges, Government and other stakeholders to promote and highlight this initiative. With the partnership forged between the OGCA, Rob Ellis and government, we are confident that this will result in a win/win outcome for our members and our industry. As most of us have experienced, the procurement system/process in Ontario has changed and is challenging at times. The OGCA has been a strong voice in trying to work together with government and other buyers of construction to implement a system with processes that will help bridge the gap between the expectations of the buyers, consultants and contractors. We intend to continue our open dialogue and work together with the OAA and the Consulting Engineers to better understand the challenges that the procurement processes are experiencing. I am confident that with a collaborative, open and honest approach, government and other buyers of construction will eventually agree to a system that will be fair, consistent and meet the needs of all parties. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the present and the past Chairs for their hard work and leadership. It is their efforts that have helped make this industry as great as it is. I am honoured to be the incoming Chair and look forward to this coming year to serving our Membership along with the Executive, Board of Directors and staff. We are in an industry that demands passion and dedication. With a unified voice, we can make a difference and make changes for the better. ■ Fall/Winter 2016 11
