FEATURE The Value ™ of COR Continues to Rise By Mark Elias, Infrastructure Health & Safety Association ith more major buyers of construction like the City of Toronto adopting the Certificate of Recognition (COR™) as a prerequisite to the bidding process for infrastructure projects in Ontario, firms interested in securing those projects are starting to recognize that their health and safety management systems need to measure up to the expectations of a national standard. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the COR™ program is that through its continuous development it not only continues to meet and exceed those expectations, it is also driving improvements in the prevention of workplace injury and illness. COR™ certified firms are also adapting to the needs of the industry to ensure every level of business is served efficiently. With the help of the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA), the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) has obtained valuable feedback from its stakeholders for ongoing improvements to the COR™ program. The IHSA has launched a review of the current COR™ processes to improve program administration, expand capacity for auditing and assisting firms, and build tools to better serve small business. In conjunction with the OGCA, IHSA has created an Industry Advisory Panel to facilitate continuous feedback from program participants to program administrators. These improvements along with communications from the Chief Prevention Officer (CPO), George Gritziotis, have solidified the COR™ program as an effective system that will measure up to future accreditation from the Ministry of Labour (MOL). At a recent OGCA event held at the Centre for Health and Safety Innovation (CHSI) in Mississauga, CPO Gritziotis spoke to some of the major stakeholders in support of their efforts towards achieving COR™: "I'd like to say that the principles and the mandate of COR™, or programs like COR™, are consistent with where we want to go in the ministry across the system. As well, I don't have any doubt that when the CPO along with the Minister finally land an accreditation Fall/Winter 2016 29
