ove what you do.
If anyone subscribes to that philosophy
of life, it's the people at Maple Reinders.
It started 50 years ago, in 1967. Fred J.
Reinders, the company's Chairman and Founder,
began a small engineering consultancy out of
his basement.
For the first few years or so, it was a lean
operation with just a few employees servicing
clients in Southern Ontario. Most of the projects the team undertook were concrete docks
and pump stations - far from the multimillion
dollar commercial, residential and municipal
infrastructure projects the company does now.
"Yes, we had humble beginnings," Fred says,
"but we really enjoyed working on those projects. We saw them as opportunities to further
develop our skills in many different areas,
from planning to engineering to architecture to
project management."
"My formula from the start was to apply
sound engineering principles to the design and
construction of every project we undertook,
and manage the process with scrutiny of every
possible detail. By doing so, we could offer

value-real value-for money. And we could create things of lasting value."
It was a formula that worked. The company
continued to win bigger and more complex projects as its reputation steadily grew.
One turning point was the $20+ million design
build project, the ABB Body-in-White office and
manufacturing facility, in the late '80s. In a
time where many contractors were still new to
the design build project form, Maple Reinders
handled all aspects of project delivery, including
site search and selection, land acquisition, land
re-zoning, siteplan agreement, design services,
lease-back arrangements, and the construction
of the 300,000 sf facility.
From there, the company began to grow
quickly, moving beyond smaller municipal infrastructure projects, to win design build contracts
for commercial and institutional buildings, as
well as large-scale wastewater treatment plants
in Central, Western and Northern Canada.
"We became the leading company doing
design build wastewater treatment facilities
in Canada within the public sector," says Mike
Reinders, the current President of Maple Reinders.

Mike, Fred's son, joined the company in 1981,
after graduating with his engineering degree
from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and
working as a consultant in British Columbia.
Spending that time in Western Canada soon
proved to be a huge boon for Maple Reinders, as
Mike worked with a number of talented engineers
and construction professionals in the field.
Eventually, those individuals joined the company, driving projects such as The King's College
in Edmonton, and major waste treatment plants
in Banff and Jasper. This was also the time the
company evolved from design build to design
build operate, taking on the management of
these facilities as well.
The Hamilton Centralized Composting Facility,
completed in 2006, was another benchmark
project for the company, and industry as a
whole. This project utilized innovative in-tunnel composting technology from a European
company, marking the first time it was used in
North America. Since then, Maple Reinders has
gone on to partner with the Dutch company on
numerous projects, as it continued to expand
its portfolio of environmental projects.
