The Generals - Fall/Winter 2017 - 7

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

I
By Frank Perricone

The OGCA has a strong
and well-respected
voice out there and it
will only get stronger
if we are all informed
and up-to-date with the
on-going changes.

t has been somewhat of a frustrating spring
and summer this year for most of us in the
construction industry. We have experienced
unpredictable and unprecedented precipitation that has caused many of us to readjust
schedules and for some, equated to a financial
burden for which we may not have accounted.
We are all hoping that we will have a more seasonal and predictable fall and winter to help us
through this year.
As part of my role as your Chairman, I have
attended numerous functions where I have had
the privilege of representing our association and
you, our members. More often than not, I bump
into you at these events. During one specific
function, I ran into a member who wanted to
know what initiatives the OGCA was working
on and their current status. As we were talking
and as I was listing the different initiatives, he
stopped me as soon as I mentioned the New
Lien Act Reform. He said, "I heard something
about that but don't know what it's all about...
why hasn't the OGCA sent out information on
this?" I was concerned but not surprised with
his comments and questions. I went through and
highlighted some of the changes that will affect
him as a member, and we had a great discussion about some of the other proposals that the
OGCA is working on. This type of reaction is not
uncommon in our industry. I find that quite a
few in the industry are not up to date with the
ever-changing landscape.
It seems that we are at a point in time
where information overload is commonplace
and there just isn't enough time to read every
memo or every email that comes across our
desks. With voice mail, texting, email, Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and many others, we just can't keep up. I am also a victim of
this and find myself prioritizing my email Inbox
and other media streams. I don't know what the
magic solution is to this ever-growing problem,
but I do know that we need to make time to

read up and be informed on the issues that
will affect our businesses and the way that our
industry functions. I can assure you that the
hard-working staff at the OGCA is busy working
alongside Government and Industry Partners to
ensure that our members are well-represented
and well-informed. This is done through the
bi-monthly newsletter and our website that
is updated with the latest information in the
industry. I urge all of you to take the time to
read the OGCA newsletters and periodically
visit the website, and would welcome any suggestions or feedback as to how the OGCA can
improve the way information is sent to you.
The OGCA has a strong and well-respected
voice out there and it will only get stronger if
we are all informed and up-to-date with the
on-going changes.
This year's AGM will be held in Toronto from
October 19 to 22 and is fast approaching! Our
new Chairman Paul Raboud has planned a very
exciting AGM with informative speakers and with
many opportunities to network and interact with
industry leaders and partners. I find opportunities like this to be a great way to keep up with
industry news and changes. I strongly urge all of
you to take the time and come down this year.
You will find the experience to be very informative, rewarding and a great deal of fun! I look
forward to seeing you there.
Finally, my term as your Chair is quickly
coming to a close. I can tell you that it has
been a very exciting, fulfilling and rewarding
experience for me. I especially enjoyed meeting
and interacting with a lot of our members and
our partners in this great industry. I wish Paul
the very best as our new Chairman and am
quite confident that he will be an exceptional
Chairman for our association. I would also like
to thank the Executive, Clive and the staff at
the OGCA for their hard work and unwavering
dedication to our members and the construction industry.
