s anyone grappling with
today's challenging business
environment can confirm, the
speed at which conditions in
the marketplace evolve can be dizzying.
Now, more than ever, an organization
on the road to optimal success needs
to be able to access valid, detailed data
that can be used by management to
formulate effective strategy. With a
nod to the commonly-held adage, "If
you can't measure it, you can't manage
it!", it's nothing short of essential for
operators to a have a solid grasp on the
factors that are driving performance in
order to create a customized roadmap to
achieve the best possible results.
Enter benchmarking.
Merriam-Webster defines it as, "The
study of a competitor's product or
business practices in order to improve
the performance of one's own company."
OMCA Director of Regulatory Affairs
Jennifer Fox, shares, "It is the process
used for gaining a measure, specifically

a 'benchmark', and serves as a precise
way of discovering what is the best
performance being achieved - whether
that be internally in a specific company,
as it relates to one's competitors, or even
by a completely different industry."
Originally benchmarking was
primarily used in the manufacturing
sector; however, it is now regarded
as an extremely effective tool with
applications in virtually any industry.
Companies across all sectors make use
of it to compete in, and even lead, their
respective industries. Benchmarking
allows organizations to develop strategy
that is based on competitive need
and is driven by concrete data versus
what management intuits. As such,
it is credited with seeing reductions
in costs, increases in productivity, as
well as improvements in quality and
customer service.
Speaking to the value of
benchmarking as a sound business
practice, Dietrich Kuhlmann, Ph.D.,

Canisius College School of Business,
says, "Without the ability to measure
where we were in the past and where we
are now, any attempt at improving our
current position in the future can only be
done blindly. This is certainly not a good
plan for moving forward for any business.
Notably, there is no magic metric that
works for all situations; rather, any
measure your company uses should be
specific for your company or industry."
Fox joined the OMCA with an
in-depth knowledge of this type of tool,
having served at the Ontario Trucking
Association (OTA) when it introduced a
benchmarking program for the trucking
industry. Fox notes, "When meeting with
key OMCA operators early in my tenure,
I was intrigued to learn that some
were using internal benchmarking as a
method to incentivize staff to improve
safety and performance metrics."
Informed by this reveal, Fox and
OMCA President Doug Switzer
determined there was a credible
