s the old saying goes, friends
in need are friends indeed,
meaning that those who stick
by you in tough times are the
ones you can truly count on. At the
time of this writing, there are a lot of
people in our industry struggling to get
back on their feet after what has to be
one of the worst hurricane seasons in
living memory.
Our colleagues from the Caribbean
islands to Florida and Texas and the rest
of the Gulf states and Eastern Seaboard
have seen their properties damaged and
their businesses profoundly impacted
by a loss of revenue and customers. Our
friends are in need, and as an industry
we should all do what we can to help
them get back on their feet.
In the travel and tourism business we
talk a lot about relationship building
and how great this industry is because
of all the wonderful people in it, and
that's true. We enjoy what we do and
we thrive on meeting one another and
doing business together. This is the time
when those relationships and friendships
are most important - when people are
struggling to overcome natural disasters
and get back in business. They may need
just a little help from all of us.
We may not all be able to fill
sandbags, help rescue people who
are stranded or pump water out of
flooded buildings, but we can help

them get the message out that they
are open for business and that people
should not be afraid to come back
as soon as the clean-up is done. We
can show them some flexibility and
understanding about bookings and,
to the greatest extent possible, keep
those bookings. And we can work
with them to rebuild confidence
among tourists and travellers that
it's worth going back despite what
they may have seen on the news.
When Toronto was hit with a
different kind of natural disaster, the
SARS outbreak, 15 years ago, the
negative perceptions remained long after
the medical emergency had passed. It
took a while to rebuild the confidence in
the tourism market. I can appreciate the
difficulties that the hurricane-ravaged
areas are going to face in attracting tour
operators and tourists back as quickly as
possible when they are ready and able
to host them.
It isn't easy, and it's not always
possible. But it is important that we
all work together to help each other in
times like these. That is the real test of
our relationships. Anyone can be your
friend when times are good, but you will
get to know your real friends when times
get tough. And you always remember
those who stood with you when you
were down.
A friend in need...
