time, make it easy to forget that the little
things we do add up. As you consider the
social interconnectivity of our society
and the fluid movement of ideas and
successes, we can expect sports as a
vehicle to become more mainstream,
meaning the importance of our recreation facilities increases. To that end,
ensuring fiscally responsible operation
of these facilities becomes emphasized.
So make that step today and do one
new thing to manage your energy costs.
Change a light bulb to LED, get a light
switch installed, or add some insulation

the vehicle; we can all get onboard but
not much is going to happen. Considering
the increasing importance of our recreation programs, the role of a recreation
professional in ensuring the safety, performance and sustainability of the recreation facility is vital.
Today, the leadership shown by the
NHL on development of these principles
will serve as a call to action to players, families, and community leaders
to use sport as a vehicle to excel in life
beyond fun and exercise. This call to
action was echoed by Andrew Ference
(former NHL Player and Stanley Cup
Champion). Andrew has been passion899518_Critical.indd
ate about environmental sustainability since before being sustainable was
cool. Andrew reminded the audience
at the Summit that sometimes it's not
about answers but it's about actions.
Instinctively, we know that a small
amount of activity adds up quickly when
many get involved. Consider a rather
well-known coffee chain that has produced very wealthy franchisees from
selling a product for $1.47 at a time.
Volume of sales is not really any different than volume of activity in that
way. Little actions combined with others
make for big impacts. It can be hard
sometimes to remember and recognize
this concept when we are busy with the
normal grind of daily facility routines.
Competing priorities for our most precious resource, which is not money but

around your hot water tank. Take action,
don't wait for the perfect answer.
None of the Declarations of Principles
nor similar concepts, beliefs and values
can be used to benefit society without
recreation facilities. The role of a recreation professional is vital to making our
communities better places. So embrace
the recreation professional career and
capitalize on continued education opportunities including sharing and learning
with your counterparts. The end result
is enabling the sports vehicle to operate
and thrive.
