the right information is vital to steering a review in the right direction. The very first thing when accessing your electrical energy costs is to start to track separately your kilowatts, kilowatthour dollars associated with each, as well as "other charges," the gift of global adjustment and other fees. These five numbers once a month can provide significant insight into how your facility uses electricity. If you can't get access to the invoicing from the utility, you can keep an eye on your electrical consumption by manually reading your utility meter. Some organizations include this as part of their daily log books. It's important to total your weekly or monthly measurements to watch for unusual changes. Armed with this knowledge, you are now in a knowledgeable position about your building. Be careful: writing down numbers does not provide awareness by itself. Some form review is needed. Watch for swings in cost or usage. It might be that the equipment is not operating well (maybe a controller has failed), but it could also be that this month's "other charges" are out of alignment with the normal amounts. Knowing that this isn't the result of facilities operation nor equipment will save valuable time and effort on an otherwise broader review. Acquiring this data might present the biggest obstacle. Be resourceful and make use of what's available. Don't forget your fuel bill. You also want to track your gas (or fuel) usage and dollars. Typically, these items are not subject to such radical swings in usage and expense, unless, of course, you aren't monitoring them and Murphy's Law will prevail. So, how do all your efforts of tracking and thinking about usage associate with the "It depends" answer? Understanding your costs is critical to being able to know the answer to your, "It depends," paradox. Understanding your costs (or at least your usage) will allow you to make informed decisions about why another organization's experience may not translate well to yours.
