Facility Forum - Fall 2016 - 18

Hardness There are different grades of hardness in granite. This is due to their level of quartz with quartz being the hardest of all the minerals in granite. The other non-granite minerals may have softer minerals present. Softer granite typically will not retain a polish as well as hard granite. It will also be more subject to scratches or rub marks than hard granite. Both of these are important when you are looking for a granite structure to look good over the long term. Closing Figures 5 and 6: Granite with smooth colour consistency versus one with blotches and distinct variations. Colour Consistency Granite comes in many different colours. In addition, some granites have waves, veins or movement within the granite slab. Other granites are predominately one colour with little variation. These granites are normally a priority for the memorial industry including columbaria. Figures 5 and 6 show two columbarium end walls, one with a consistent look and the other (import) unit that has a number of blotches and is less attractive. The movement granites are common for countertops where the consumer is looking for that 'unique' look. Both movement and single colour granites can be used in the construction industry. You can see with these variations that granite truly is unique. For anyone involved in purchasing granite for a columbarium or other item, it is extremely important to do your research to ensure that the granite that you are selecting is the right granite for your needs. Granite is the natural choice for anyone looking for a stone that will provide beauty and strength over the long term. ■ For more information, contact Kelly Conn at  1-800-567-2793 or kconn@can.rockofages.com, www.rockofagescanada.com.
