intramural hockey leagues - which
comprise the largest intramural hockey
program in North America. The Varsity
Blues intercollegiate men's and women's
ice sports teams - including figure skating, ice hockey and short-track speed
skating - take up most of the remaining
ice time for practice and league competition. Both the men's and women's ice
hockey teams have hosted and brought
home numerous championship banners that are displayed from rafters
high above the ice surface. In March
1993, the Varsity Arena was host for a
sixth consecutive time to the nationals for the Canadian University Hockey
Championship tournament. The Varsity
Blues teams led the nation in the number of league and national titles won
compared to other schools in the rest
of the country.

with a new roof and HVAC system. But
the main part of the renovation was
replacing the ice plant, widening the
ice surface by 5' to become 196' by
85', and widening the aisle, making
it more accessible. Enlarging the ice
surface proved to be a challenge, as
the demolition work was tougher than
anticipated. It was discovered that the
concrete contained asbestos; therefore,
a full inspection of the surface was
required to ensure there were no cracks.
The construction continued and was

completed for the official re-opening on
February 19, 1986. With all the changes
completed, the seating capacity is now
4,116.
To this day, Varsity Arena, hidden
among the vastness of the surrounding
growth in the area in Toronto's downtown core, remains one of the most
viable multi-use university facilities in
the country. It is proud to be called home
by thousands of aspiring student athletes
as they take aim at making their mark
in this world.
■

A Time for Change
As the arena was entering the 1980s
it became apparent that if it was to
continue to be a multi-purpose venue
for the university and the community,
some major renovations were needed.
A failed fire inspection of the arena by
the City of Toronto in 1977 resulted in
the facility only being allowed to hold
Blues games and examinations. All other
events were cancelled until the building
was brought up to code. Despite the main
structure being sound, it was deemed to
be a fire hazard. Demolition of the old to
make way for a new arena was debated,
but instead of that drastic option, U of
T launched a campaign to raise the
money required for the renovations.
The estimated cost of the renovations
was $3,000,000. Student groups raised
$12,000, and the Varsity Arena Fund
Advisory Committee raised $400,000;
surpassing their target by $150,000. A
grant of $1,450,000 was also received
through Lottario, which was part of the
Ministry of Tourism and Recreation in
support of initiatives supporting sports
and recreation.
In 1985, the renovation project began.
The project included building the Blue
and White Lounge situated on the second floor in the south end, as well as
increasing the size of the main entrance
and the arena office. It brought more
appealing concession stands, along
