Facility Forum - Fall 2017 - 17

"I am very excited about my new
role with the turfgrass research program at the University of Guelph," says
John Watson, "I know that my practical
experience from the golf industry, combined with my research background will
allow me to excel in this new role."
Prior to this role, John was employed in
the capacity of GTI communications coordinator where he disseminated current
turfgrass information to industry. He was
a key liaison and point person for GTI relations and the relocation project, managed
GTI social media accounts, and also implemented a strategy for turf related digital
media to promote turfgrass and education
at the University of Guelph. John also has
served as an instructor in the Diploma in
Turfgrass Management program teaching
an applied case studies course. He also
was crucial in putting together the education program for the Ontario Turfgrass
Symposium a professional development
conference that ORFA partners with the
University of Guelph and other turfgrass
industry organizations to host.
"The GTI and the Department of
Plant Agriculture recognize the importance of investing in technical support
for research programs and we are very
pleased to have John joining our team in
this capacity," states Eric Lyons.
John has both a B.Sc. in Agriculture
and a M.Sc. in Plant Agriculture from the
University of Guelph. His M.Sc. research
focused on nitrogen fertility of different species of putting green turf. "I am
very excited about the future of turfgrass
research at the University of Guelph and
it is truly an honour to be a member of
this niche research program" says John.
"As we embark on a new era with the
construction of a new state-of-the-art
research facility, we must reflect on our
past, look to the future and how we can
best serve the turfgrass industry over the
decades to come."
In his short time as Research Technician,
John has initiated five industry service
research projects and is currently assisting with two graduate student projects in
the Jordan/Lyons lab group. "I have always
had a passion for turf and I believe it is
essential not only for recreational playing
surfaces, but also has many important
functions in our urban landscapes that
are often overlooked. One way we can

communicate these benefits is through
education, training of graduate students,
and conducting innovative research projects for industry here at the University
of Guelph."

GTI Update
The GTI continues to move forward
with the relocation project. The relocation of the GTI is necessitated by the
land owner, province of Ontario, and
the city of Guelph desires to develop the
site. This has created an opportunity to
revitalize the GTI, continuing its goal to
be a premier research and education
centre in Ontario and a world-class centre for turfgrass research, education and
outreach. The new GTI will have extensive research plots with constructed root
zones. The building will have space to
continue to host industry offices along
with expanded facilities for outreach
including an expansion of space for
instruction, with a small and large conference rooms. The GTI will continue to
host the Turfgrass Managers Short Course
and other industry training events.
The new GTI facility will also have
updated research space including work
areas for graduate and undergraduate
students performing research on turfgrass. The research lab is also being
modernized in the process.
"We are excited to be moving forward
with this project," said GTI Director
Eric Lyons. "As things start to go in the

ground, the project becomes real and you
start to plan how we can use relocation
to revitalize the GTI, and start to raise the
profile of the turfgrass industry."
The project is a significant investment
in the turfgrass industry by the Ontario
Agricultural College and the University
of Guelph partnering with the provincial government. The relocation project
is a $15 million project with $12 million being provided by the province.
Fundraising for the industry portion of
the project is well on its way to its goal
of $3 million.
The site is beginning to take shape.
The irrigation pond has been excavated,
lined and the installation of drainage into
the research plots continues. Rootzones
will follow the completion of the drainage
and establishment soon after.
■
Dr. Lyons commented on the process of
planning the new GTI, "Construction of
turfgrass research centers are a rare event
in the world. It is exciting to be able to plan
things from the ground up. We are trying
hard to assure that the facility provides
the industry research opportunities but,
also is a premier outreach and living laboratory for professional development and
education of industry professionals and
the public. The turfgrass industry faces
many challenges, some economic and some
social. The industry needs to be innovative and forward thinking to be sustainable
moving forward."
