concern and the specific notion that his
utility was losing money from this lack
of a "sale." He smiled and said, "We get
most of it back." As I considered it further, I realized he was correct. Factories
"make up" production. Homeowners do
their laundry or run their dishwashers
after the service is returned. It's only
the brief interruption in lighting use that
isn't returned.
However, this 45 per cent loss in utility
sales is never coming back. No one can
make a change to this permanent energyburden reduction, either financially or
environmentally. That 45 per cent system
savings is off the grid, gone, saved by the
owner - forever. In a world where we
justify everything based on the amount
of time until our money is returned, can
we really evaluate an improvement based
on a simple number when the improvement will not only pay for itself, but have
a permanent change in cost and environmental footprint?
Other organizations are also taking up
the redevelopment approach. The City
of London is underway with an upgrade
at the Covent Garden Market outdoor

skating facility with the latest in operatorassistance high-efficiency equipment. The
Smart Rink Connect components provide
the latest innovation in safety, efficiency
and maintenance monitoring features for
refrigeration plant equipment. This redeveloped system is a huge step forward
in allowing operators to quickly monitor
safety, efficiency and reliability from a
singular touch-screen interface or from
remote locations. The monitored features
are coded with color-changing displays
ensuring immediate recognition of a potential problem long before it has an opportunity to become a significant issue.
The City of London is not alone in its
leadership on redevelopment. The City
of Vaughan is also underway on a redevelopment of the Father Ermanno Bulfon
Community Centre's outdoor skating
facility. The existing refrigeration plant is
being upgraded with new high-efficiency
low-impact equipment that far exceeds
conventional equipment. A dramatic reduction in on-site refrigerant with ultrahigh
efficiency compressors and the latest in
ultralow water system consuming condensing equipment will make this newly

redeveloped a sustainable showpiece in the
arena industry. Rounding out the upgrade
will be a new concrete pad along with
new boards and glass. Both of these sites
embedded efficient, innovative and sustainable features that merge complimentary
fiscal responsibility and environmentally
advanced redevelopment upgrades.
This is the time to put our plans into
action. Let's face it: Most of us are not
responsible for budgeting and even
fewer of us have the ability to approve
budget requests. However, that doesn't
mean the task should be left to others.
It might be that your organization is not
aware of the possibility of redevelopment. It might be that your organization
is unaware of the improvements being
implemented by others and the very real
and significant results being delivered.
Let them know. Tell everyone - friends,
relatives, strangers - no one should be
spared the message. Something can be
done. Awaken the Energy Champion
in you and your organization. Chances
are confirmed findings of 45 per cent
reduced will recruit many other Energy
Champions rather quickly.
