Facility Forum - Fall 2017 - 43

time is lacrosse to basketball and vice versa
so that made the weekend tough on the
crew. Additionally, at this time of year we
can't really schedule our conversion staff
due to uncertainty in the schedule of events
so we had to scramble somewhat to ensure
we had sufficient staff for the weekend.

ORFA: This format must also
pose some staff-scheduling
challenges.

BW: We typically average 20 to 22 conversions every month for eight months
when the ice is in - it's non-stop. On an
average conversion night, the ACC has 20 to
25 unionized employees working a changeover, half full-time, half part-time. A typical
nighttime ice-to-court conversion begins at
10 p.m. and usually ends around 6 a.m.
During post-season play, it is even more
challenging from the conversion process,
since we could face Stars on Ice to basketball to lacrosse to basketball over the
same weekend (lacrosse to basketball is
our longest conversion and now it's second
round the media set up increases - visualize probably 75 per cent of our west storage
area being used as media work rooms/

press conference area - and that adds to
the conversion time; figure skating requires
us to build some ice with deck around it so
we need to shave down/level ice before we
can start the basketball conversion). To add
to the challenge, we were in budget planning for next year's operating and capital
projects and with our new alignment the
MSLE Operational staff were shifting back
and forth to Ricoh for Marlie playoffs and
BMO for TFC games. These team members
do most of the heavy lifting in making this
all happen and in true facility operational
spirit their efforts are at times taken for
granted but I realize and appreciate what
they accomplish. I am often asked how
one might join the conversion team and
I always give a warning: "Working at the
ACC is an amazing experience but it is
tough on the body, even harder on relationships, and it kills your social life... and,
no, there are no free tickets." Feel free to
check out employment opportunities at
bit.ly/MLSEjobs.

ORFA: Any final thoughts?

BW: Looking back to the start of my
career in 1980 sweeping the stands at the

Old Maple Leaf Gardens and how busy we
thought we were in that facility, and comparing it to what happens at the ACC today
is like comparing the Wright Brothers first
flight to the Space Shuttle. From the outside
looking in, it may all look seamless, but
like any facility operations we have regular
challenges that as a team we address and
move forward. We are continually tweaking
the building (which will soon turn 20 years
old) to improve the customer experience.
I suspect somewhere there is a group discussing the next big MSLE event at the ACC
and operations will respond to ensure it
happens. It's what we do!
