outhward Community Park, the Town of
Grimsby's new recreation facility that opened in
May of 2017, is a vital and important part of our
community. This project has been considered
a community priority since 2006. This park is
a place for play, a place for sports, a place to
enjoy nature, a place for fitness; a place that
all citizens can enjoy and take pride in.
Southward Community Park, a sprawling 35-hectare site,
features multiple soccer and baseball fields, a running track, a
leash-free dog park and a forested walking trail. There is also
a community building on site with a kitchen, change rooms,
and community rooms. It was a project 30 years in the making and became possible when the Southward family agreed
to offer up the land by Mountain and Mud streets.
"When I think of this park I think of the families that will be
coming together and making memories here," said Alderman
David Wilson, Chair of the Recreation Services Committee for
the Town of Grimsby.
Our sense of community is a big part of civic pride and what
makes us Canadian. Our new facility offers multiple sport and
recreation opportunities; which contributes to healthy communities and exciting new opportunities.
For the Canada 150 year, the site hosted several celebrations
including a grand opening in June. In July, the site featured
an expanded fireworks display and music event as part of a
community festival weekend. It was a spectacular, memorable
event with great reviews by community members. The site
will also be the host of a Canada 150 time capsule that will
be opened in 50 years through a partnership with the Grimsby
Public Library and the Grimsby Public Art Gallery.
