Facility Forum - Winter 2017 - 35

Instagram is quickly gaining rank as one
of the most widely used social media
platforms in the world,3 and is surpassing Twitter for use amongst Canadians.4
We found that many municipalities
who are on Instagram are using it for
the promotion of recreation facilities.
They either share occasional posts about
recreation facilities and events on their
central Instagram account, or they have
a complete separate account dedicated
to recreation. For example, check out
the City of Barrie's Instagram account
(@citybarrie), or the Kirkland Lake
Complex (@klcomplex).
You may be wondering: is Twitter
no more? Not necessarily. It's still an
important platform for journalists, media
outlets, elected officials, and influencers. If you use Twitter, make sure you're
measuring engagement in some way to
ensure you're reaching your desired audience. Otherwise, it may be time to prioritize other platforms ahead of Twitter.

Trend #4 - The Importance of
Photo and Video
Regardless of what social media platform you're on, we know that posts with
images and videos create more engagement. It's no wonder that Instagram,
which requires at least a photo to post,
has become so popular. This year, we saw
more and more municipalities understanding the importance of making their
social feeds as visual as possible. For
recreation facilities, the photo and video
opportunities are almost endless! But, we
know finding good photo and video is
easier said than done, so we've provided
some useful tips and workarounds below.

positive going on within your facility?
Snap some photos or short videos,
even if you're not sure what you'll use
it for. Remember to use photo release
forms when needed, according to your
facility's policy. Soon, you'll start to
have a collection of photos and videos
saved for a rainy day. Keep in mind
that most smart phones now take good
quality photos, so you don't necessarily need to have a high-tech camera
with you at all times.
* There are places to find free photos
online, such as Pixabay, Creative
Commons, or Adobe Spark's free photo
library. But, be sure to read the fine
print. Many of these photos may be
labelled as free, but some may not
actually be free for commercial use.
They may also require attribution to
the creator, or may not allow modification. Proceed with caution here,
so you don't land yourself with a
copyright infringement.
* Many of your facility's patrons may
be sharing photos and videos online
already, and they're just a click away.
Find these photos and videos by viewing your facility's geolocation within
the social media site, or hashtags
related to the facility or event. If you
find a photo you like, first message the
original poster for their permission to
use it, and whether they would like to
be attributed when you post it.

Here are Some of
Key Takeaways
* If you aren't on social media yet, start
with Facebook, then Instagram, and
consider Twitter if it fits your audience.
* Consider starting up social media
accounts for your recreation facility, or work with your municipality
to share your updates on their social
media accounts.
* Photos, photos, photos, and video, when
possible! Use some of our tips for always
having photos and video ready to post.

How to Amp up Your
Photo and Video Game
Sourcing good photos can be expensive and time consuming. It can require
paying for a photographer, purchasing
stock photos, or having an employee
available, equipped with a decent quality
camera. While sometimes it's worthwhile
to invest in these things, it's not always
realistic. Here are some tips and tricks:
* Take some time to start collecting
"b-roll" photos and videos. B-roll is a
film and television term that refers to
extra footage or photos to supplement
a story. At an event? See something
