Ontario Pipeline - Spring 2015 - (Page 10)

OMWA PRESIDENT'S REPORT increasing Our Advocacy Efforts T he Ontario Municipal Water Association (OMWA) has significantly stepped up its advocacy efforts this past summer. We have had many discussions with various stakeholders and with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change related to the need to review and better coordinate legislation related to the provision of drinking water. This is especially important for property developments, and where the distinction between municipal water systems, regulated systems, and "plumbing" is concerned. In that regard, we continue to work closely with the Ministry to provide clarification and resolve many outstanding issues on different water-related legislations, with the intention to provide the Ministry with assistance in updating and clarifying policies and regulations. The OMWA continues to work diligently with our partners the Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) and the Ontario Water Works Equipment Association (OWWEA), to develop and present a best-in-class Conference and Trade Show to be held in Toronto at the Westin Harbour Castle, beginning April 26 through to April 29, 2015. The OMWA will present topics of interest related to the governance and overall administration of municipal water systems, as well as unveil our new Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan for the OMWA will guide our activities into the future, and revitalize our focus on provincial policy and governance of the municipal water sector in Ontario. The cornerstone of our Plan is our advocacy work. We will build new relationships and strengthen our existing ones in an effort to advance the issues of public water services, and we will create more value for our members. In addition to our Monday afternoon session, the OMWA will present a Government updates session Tuesday afternoon, providing an opportunity for various ministries of the Government of Ontario to present on policies, programs and municipal drinking water initiatives. This affords attendees an opportunity to dialogue with Ontario Ministries on pending or contemplated changes to drinking water programs and policies. The 2015 OMWA/OWWA Joint Annual Conference and OWWEA Trade Show has been rebranded as Ontario's Water Conference and Trade Show, and I look forward to seeing everyone in Toronto. The Ontario Municipal Water Association continues to strive to be The Voice of Ontario's Public Water Authorities, representing municipalities and municipallyowned water systems across Ontario. On behalf of our municipal members, we look to develop and implement long-term policies and programs for the benefit of the greater public and ensure sustainable and safe drinking water systems in Ontario, and address our most-pressing issues that we face. 10 | O N T A R I O P i P E L i n E | SPRING 2015 AnDREW HEnRY PRESIDENT, OMWA THE STRATEgIC PLAN FOR THE OMWA WILL gUIDE OUR ACTIvITIES INTO THE FUTURE, AND REvITALIzE OUR FOCUS ON PROvINCIAL POLICy AND gOvERNANCE OF THE MUNICIPAL WATER SECTOR IN ONTARIO.
