FROM THE PUbLICATIONS CHAIR The Five Ps of Marketing T he theme of this issue of Ontario Pipeline is "What Is Ontario Doing Right?" In response to that question, the old "Five Ps" of marketing spring to mind: Product, Place, Promotion, Price and People. Ontario has been home to the development of some of the most influential water treatment products in the world. From membrane treatment to ultraviolet disinfection, we have led the way! Perhaps this innovation comes from having an abundance of water and moving and treating it for our resource industries or maybe it is simply born from our pioneering spirit; regardless, Ontario has led comparable jurisdictions in the number of water-related patents issued. As a place to do water business, Ontario is the gateway to the North American market. Our proximity to the united States, coupled with the diversity of our society, welcomes international business and makes Ontario a great choice to foster growth. When it comes to promoting Ontario's water sector, I'm not aware of any organization that compares to WaterTAP. Working to complement the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, WaterTAP is singular in its focus on water and provides a wealth of resources to assist companies to improve their investor readiness. The right price comes from knowing your costs, your competitor's costs and your value to your customers which, in turn, dictates margin/profit. Ontario's investment community has shown leadership in nurturing companies on their value proposition, and firms such as XPV Capital have been influential in recognizing and developing companies in the sector. Of all the Ps, people stands out. Whether they are in public or private sector, the most important thing is how everyone works together to deliver safe drinking water. Ontario has the operators, technicians, engineers, researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, investors, public servants, politicians and strategists who deliver on both the economic and socio-environmental value of water. You have an outstanding opportunity to experience the Five Ps in action!
