FEATURE | CONFERENCE WATER ON THE WATER: ONTARIO'S WATER CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW N ewly rebranded and poised to become the premiere drinking water event in the province, Ontario's Water Conference & Tradeshow filled the Westin Harbour Castle on Toronto's waterfront with everything current in the industry. For three days in April, 1,050 water professionals from across the province shared ideas, explored operations and debated policy, all within sight of one of the world's largest sources of fresh water. Following the OWWA Annual General Meeting on Sunday afternoon and a meet-and-greet reception on the trade show floor on Sunday evening, the conference opened with a flourish on Monday morning. A piper and drummer led the Boards of the three partner associations into the morning plenary in the hotel's ballroom where delegates were gathered. Abhay Tadwalkar, president of OWWA, welcomed the assembly to his own hometown and Andrew Henry, president of the OMWA, brought greetings from his members. Tom Moulton, AWWA Director, introduced Michael Simpson, Visiting Director from AWWA, who then surprised him by presenting him with the 2015 Fuller Award. 12 | O N T A R I O P I P E L I N E | SUMMER 2015 Education The first keynote speaker was George Kourounis, the host of Angry Planet on OLN (Outdoor Life Network). Known as an explorer, adventurer, and storm-chaser, Kourounis' day's work may find him climbing in a volcano, descending into a cave or chasing down a tornado. "When I encounter water," Kourounis joked, "It's usually trying to kill me!" The next scheduled speaker was Minister of Environment and Climate Change Glen Murray, however, a conflict left him unable to attend and Glenn Thibeault, MPP for Sudbury and Parliamentary Assistant
