Ontario Pipeline - Summer 2017 - 27

REPORT | YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

2017 YP Conference Recap
BY VICTORIA CHENNETTE, PETE SAMSON, AND SILVIA VLAD

oung professionals made a
strong showing at this year's
conference, with keen participation in a range of committeeorganized events.
The inaugural Beyond the Specs workshop saw suppliers and young professionals come together to discuss performance
requirements, common errors and important questions to consider when specifying different types of equipment including
valves, pipe connections, flow meters,
instrumentation and pumps. Special thanks
are extended to those suppliers who took
the time to join our discussions. Building
on this successful trial run in Ontario, we
encourage YPs to join the Beyond the Specs
session to be held at ACE in June!
Congratulations to the 2017 Water Cup
winners Laura Meteer, Sarah Larlee, Corinne
Bertoia and Liz Taylor-Edmonds! This year's
competition was a pitched contest hosted
by incoming YP committee chair Silvia Vlad,
with strong contenders on all five teams
and a roaring crowd. Several members of
the winning team are returning victors. The

Water Cup is an annual feature of the conference, teaming young and experienced
professionals for a "Jeopardy!"-style game.
With questions ranging from water trivia
to local lore, a wide range of knowledge
is needed.
Fresh Ideas has become a staple of the
YP programming at the conference. Like
all technical papers presented at the
conference, the abstracts submitted are
reviewed by each OWWA committee and
selected for their merit and expectation to
add value to the conference experience.
Only after being selected for a conference
stream are the main authors reviewed
to confirm they fit the Fresh Ideas criteria: being both a Young Professional
and a first time OWWA conference presenter. Speakers are evaluated on the technical merits of their topic, the relevance
to the water sector, how innovative it is
and their presentation skills, with multiple judges evaluating each paper using
a common set of criteria. This year was a
record for the competition with 15 papers
qualifying! We are thrilled at the volume

of bright young professionals developing
work worthy of a conference paper and
delivering presentations to share their
work. This year's winner was Cody Warner
from Deep Trekker Inc. with a presentation titled "Improving Water Management
Practices with Underwater Inspection
Tools." A very interesting talk covering a
variety of tools and technologies hitting
that sweet spot that submerged deep
enough below the surface of the topic to
provoke our thoughts, without going to
so deep were crushed by the complexity
and pressure (see what we did there...).
Congratulations, Cody - we wish you the
best of luck as you follow in a long tradition of Ontarians who have presented at
the AWWA Annual Conference and Expo,
hoping that, like your forebears, you will
bring home a win there as well!
Some of the other awards we are proud
of as a Section, although not specifically
awarded by the YP Committee are nevertheless awarded to YPs and we want to
give them a second shout-out. The Student
Art Competition is available to high school
students and is broken into two categories.
Congratulations to Logan Warkentin on the
Grade 9/10 win, and to Sarah Mitterhauser
on the Grade 11/12 win!  The Provart Award
is presented by the University Research
Technical Stream and this year went to
Yanting Liu from the University of Waterloo
for her paper titled Powdered Activated
Carbon for the Removal of Microcystin-LR
and other Cyanotoxins. This research was
supervised by Dr. Bill Anderson and Dr.
Sigrid Peldszus.  A huge congratulations
to all those Young Professionals out there
trying to innovate and be a part of Ontario's
leading resource on water!
The young professionals committee
would like to thank the YP Program sponsors CH2M and IPEX and our host the City
of Niagara Falls. Thank you to everyone
who participated in our events, and we
look forward to seeing you all next year!
