REPORT | YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

Workshop: A Day in the Life
of an Operator
BY EMILY JARVIS, OPTIMIZATION SPECIALIST, VEOLIA

"N

o operator, no water" is the slogan used by the
American Water Works Association and, indeed, we
owe a lot to the individual operators who take pride
in ensuring that our water is safe to drink. Operators
have a lot of responsibility. They need to monitor the treatment processes,
perform maintenance, and conduct lab tests and data analysis to ensure
that targets are met for superior water quality. As someone who shares
this passion for operations, I had recently led the organization of an event
that allowed participants to obtain hands-on experience within a fully
functioning water treatment plant after some classroom discussions
and exercises.
The workshop took place at the Nanticoke water treatment plant, operated by Veolia Water in Haldimand County. The plant uses a micro-ballasted
flocculation system with three dual media filters followed by chlorination.
The plant was commissioned in October 2016, and since then, startup has
undergone many in-plant special studies conducted by operations staff.
The studies have supported operators in their efforts to troubleshoot
performance issues and develop data based decision-making skills.
The in-class portion of the workshop began with a brief icebreaker,
followed by a presentation on the plant's optimization program, which
is supported by the EPA's composite correction program. The program
provides an operational model for the plant, helping to address plant
limitations and identifying future capital project needs.
Tyler Kelly from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks
(MECP) then provided an overview of O. Reg. 170/03, 169/03 and adverse
reporting. Participants were enthusiastic about the chance to seek clarification on reporting and interpretation of the regulations directly from
a regulator.
