WHAT
OPTIMIZATION
MEANS TO ME...
BY EMILY JARVIS

T

o get some inspiration on how
to communicate my thoughts
on optimization, I researched
the definition of the word. The
result I got from Google was "the action of
making the best or most effective use of a
situation or resource."
What does optimization mean to me? I
know what it's not - and it's not a straight
and easy road where after you have crossed
the starting line the finish line is already
within sight. It's a long haul of valleys and
hills, from feeling like you're winning to
feeling like maybe you should start all
over. It's taking the commonly used word
"tenacity" and adding patience, kind words,
and lengthy group discussions about what
caused the turbidity spike and how we prevent it from happening again.
The group of people involved in optimization is not limited to one person or a manager - it's a whole group effort. Everyone
needs to be included, and everyone needs
to play their part. It's asking questions until
you've found the answer, and if you don't
have the answer, it's about reaching out
to your resources or knowledgebase until
you're satisfied with the result. Then it's
the follow-up or the documented special
study report to help bring your team to
the same level of understanding and then
moving on to the next question.
It's also important with optimization to
look from where you've been to where you
are currently to where you are heading. You
can't lose focus and think you're meeting
those goals because someone said you had
to, so optimization also needs to nurture
continued buy-in and encourage the group
that the work they are doing is essential.
Staying focused and meeting solids mass
targets and meeting filter effluent targets
of <0.1 NTU results in better public health
protection and ensures a brighter future
for the next generation.
