OWWA PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Shaping Up to Be a Great Year

S

ummer is now drawing to an end, and you could be forgiven if you say that
you won't miss it. Record high temperatures, intense rainfall, flooding, and
wildfires were in the news across Ontario this summer. Will this be the new
normal? Nobody can say for sure, but there can be no denying that we are
experiencing more frequent episodes of extreme weather. The more extreme the
weather, the greater the challenges to our public water systems, which must perform in
extreme heat and extreme cold, through droughts and through floods. Mother Nature
has been testing our preparedness, and we have no option but to meet her challenge.
Summer marks a lull in the OWWA calendar, but it hasn't been all quiet. Our annual
Student Chapter Leadership Forum was held on August 18 at Ryerson University. The
SCLF is a joint event between OWWA and WEAO (Water Environment Association of
Ontario) which provides the chairs and vice-chairs of our student chapters with the
training they need to run their chapters successfully. It is also an opportunity for them
to network with representatives from both organizations and learn about the resources
available to them. A special thanks to OWWA Board members Reg Russwurm and Pete
Samson for their participation.
September marks the start of our workshop schedule with OWWA's Water Efficiency
Fall Workshop up first on September 6. Stepping beyond the distribution system will
be our next workshop on September 19 - "Managing Building Water Quality to Control
Legionella and Other Opportunistic Pathogens." Rounding out the fall schedule will be
the Cross Connection Control Seminar on September 26, the Fall Distribution Workshop
on September 27, the Total Water Solutions Seminar in Timmins on October 11, the WEAO/
OWWA Utility Management Forum on October 16, the Communications Workshop on
October 23, the Automation Workshop on November 1, the OWWA/WEAO Climate
Change Seminar on November 8th, and the Certification & Education Fall Workshop
on November 21. For all the workshop details, go to owwa.ca/events - and don't forget
that the member price for all OWWA Committee Workshops is now just $99.
Our social calendar is filling up as well. Those in the Ottawa area won't want to miss
the OWWA/WEAO Fall Meet and Greet in the Capital on September 20, and plans for
our annual Holiday Bash are underway for the first week in December. Again, be sure
to visit owwa.ca for full details.
The second-largest AWWA conference each year is the Water Quality Technology
Conference, drawing thousands of water professionals from around the world. We are
very excited that WQTC will be returning to Canada at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto
from November 11-15, 2018. The OWWA will be actively involved, with a call for volunteers being issued in September. This is a great opportunity to be involved with a
world-class event. The OWWA will also be hosting a social night during the conference,
with more details available soon.
The Fall will also be a busy time for our OWWA staff, as we will be moving to our new
office on October 1st, at 507 Lakeshore Rd E.
It's shaping up to be a great year for the OWWA, and we have an exceptional group
of dedicated water professionals on our Board of Directors, including our two newest
members, Nat Andres from the Regional Municipality of Durham, and Ed Bertolo of
Evans Supply Limited. Volunteers are the heart of the OWWA, and I encourage you to
think about the OWWA events you have enjoyed and the people who made those events
happen. We can use your help too. Please consider joining one of our Committees - just
visit our website for a full committee list and a volunteer application.
Ontario's Water Conference and Tradeshow is the highlight of our year. Last May's event
in Niagara Falls was our best ever, and we're already looking forward to our 2019 conference in Ottawa. Don't miss the first early-bird registration deadline of December 31st.
I hope to see you there, and at many OWWA events throughout the year.
