OMWA PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Gearing Up for the Fall

A

new government brings new opportunities and new challenges. The Ontario
Municipal Water Association is working with the new provincial government and impressing upon them the critical importance of this province's
municipal water, wastewater and stormwater systems and the importance
of collaboration.
It's too early to tell what changes in water-related policy or regulations the Ford
government has in store but the OMWA intends to be part of any discussions, bringing
forward the concerns, questions and comments from our members. That's just one
more reason why it's important to renew your membership: to be sure your voice is
heard when these talks begin.
It will be doubly challenging this fall, after the municipal election. There may - as
there has been in the past - be a tsunami of changes at the municipal level to parallel
those at Queen's Park. How many of these incoming politicians will be versed in the
Standards of Care or the Safe Drinking Water Act?
These new decision makers will need to be educated in the various Acts, regulations
and policies regarding water and understand the liability that goes along with the
responsibility. Again, the OMWA can help: we are hosting three Education Days this fall
to assist both staff and elected officials get training and information, and to network
with other municipalities. They will be in Cobourg on October 15-16, in Sudbury on
November 20-21, and in London on November 13-14). Through these events, staff can
upgrade their CEUs, and elected officials get updated on their oversight responsibility
(like Standards of Care). A trade show at each will showcase equipment, services and
technologies that may benefit your own utilities. Plus - and sometimes most importantly - there will be opportunities to network and socialize with your peers from
around the province.
Challenges abound in our industry that either currently affect your water operations
and municipal strategies or are looming: microplastics and microbeads for example.
And then there's lead and arsenic, invasive species, road salt, algal blooms and West
Nile virus. Forest fires are burning across the province, creating problems with flooding, runoff, and increased pollution. No doubt some of these will spark new provincial
regulations and policies.
Our Education Days are an opportunity to learn about and discuss these and other
crucial issues. Registration for these events is open and we encourage everyone to book
your space in this year's events to stay aware and informed of legislation that impacts
both you as a politician and your staff charged with oversight responsibility of municipal
water. Locations, agendas and costs will be posted on our website, newswire, and our
(Water)3 blog, so stay tuned!
To continue our efforts to advocate on your behalf, to educate, to inform and to
engage at all levels of politics and governments, the OMWA needs you. We are an
association of municipalities and our collective voice is stronger and more powerful
than our individual ones. Your membership is essential so that we can continue our
work on your behalf and host events for your benefit.
As a Deputy Mayor for a smaller municipality I know too well how municipalities are constantly under financial pressures to cut costs and economize. But your
OMWA membership returns more in value, so when the email comes reminding you
to renew, please don't disregard it. This is your opportunity to keep the channels of
communication and influence with our upper levels of governments open and to
have your voice heard.
We need YOUR VOICE to make a difference!
