A SPRING UPDATE

I

t was great to see many of you recently in Clearwater, Fla., at our winter quarterly
board and committee meetings and our annual winter Gas Supply Conference. As
you know, gas supply is the single largest cost for all of our local distribution system
members, and thus the Gas Supply Conference is always an important and well attended
add-on conference. Braxton Williams is our Gas Supply Committee Chair this year, and
he and his committee did a great job of putting together a fast moving, interesting conference. It was particularly
good to see some of our natural gas acquisition corporation/joint action agency members again excited about the
direction and possibilities with a few new gas prepay transactions getting done, after a multi-year lag in these. It is
really a pleasure to deal with a positive item like this after several years of many anti-fossil fuel, anti-gas appliance,
anti-pipeline issues. If you weren't able to attend this year, please take time to look through the conference material
on the APGA website-it isn't the same as being there, but you can get a great overview of the material with just an
hour or two of time investment. The presentations are at www.apga.org/Clearwater.
Our Direct-Use Task Group (DUTG) grew out of some APGA strategic planning done under Matt Ballard's,
leadership and has carried forward and developed for three years under the chairmanships of Jose Lozano,
Rich Worsinger and myself. This group has been very ably lead for the full development period by Arthur
Corbin. The DUTG has developed their own strategic plan and working groups and we are currently working at
integrating this with and into the association's standing committee structure. The service and value we offer our
customers and communities could be severely undermined if the direct and best use of our premium product is
intentionally limited or reduced in the future. Please get involved and support this group's work in any way that
you can.
Next up on the APGA calendar of events is the spring Government Relations Conference in the Washington,
D.C. area. This meeting involves our quarterly spring board and committee meetings, and our annual
Government Relations Conference. While most of us conservative utility types really don't like to walk the halls
and meet with Senators and Representatives in Washington, this activity and conference are very important to
our industry's long-term success. Please make every effort to attend this year. We have an unusual opportunity
in that the Trump Administration views economic development and the role of natural gas much more positively
than it has been viewed in recent years.
It seems like I just got started, but Bert and I are already talking weekly with Greg Henderson as we begin the
transition to his chairmanship, which is set to begin at the end of July in San Francisco. Please help Greg and work
with him to continue our ongoing efforts as graciously as you have with me.
Kindest regards,

Jim Hodges
2016-2017 Chairman of the APGA Board of Directors
Executive Vice President and CEO of the Middle Tennessee Natural Gas Utility District
