he New Year rang in with a boom, as records were shattered
across the natural gas industry. From record cold weather,
record high production, record high demand, record high
storage withdrawals, to record high prices, January had
a little bit of everything to offer. And to say that the first
month of 2018 was an exciting start to the New Year would

be almost as big of an understatement as saying that shale gas production has been
okay for the natural gas industry.
As the last note of Auld Lang Syne
played in Times Square on New Year's
Eve, the most overused phrase of 2014
reemerged to steal the headlines across
the natural gas industry. That's right,
just in time to ring in the New Year, the
Polar Vortex returned to wreak havoc
on the U.S. natural gas markets. The
Arctic Express barreled southward

out of Canada to spread bone-chilling
temperatures across the U.S. for the
majority of the first two weeks of 2018.
In total, January temperatures in the U.S.
averaged six percent below normal and
40 percent colder than last year.
While the western half of the
U.S. experienced near record high
temperatures for the month, the

eastern half of the U.S. was blanketed
by an extended period of frigid weather
conditions that sent heating demand
soaring and natural gas spot market prices
racing to the highest level in four years.
The Polar Vortex, and its companion the
"bomb cyclone" combined to produce
six of the top 10 all-time demand days
for natural gas in the U.S. in less than a
two-week span between December 27,
2017 and January 5, 2018.
While the boom in domestic
production spurred by the Shale Gas
Revolution has created a relatively stable
price environment for natural gas, the
price volatility seen across many physical
U.S. gas trading hubs in January as a
result of the extreme weather conditions,
once again illustrated that the existing
pipeline infrastructure is still not sufficient
to meet the growing peak-day demand
requirements in some areas of the country.
Since the infamous Polar Vortex
winter of 2014, the domestic natural
gas industry has experienced dramatic
